Open letter of appreciation to our most Honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam for his intervention at the 100 year anniversary celebration of the Medine Sugar Estate Company Limited.

Who and what really made the difference on that occasion should be a commendable frame of reference for all Mauritians!

My brother, Fernand Leclezio and I learnt from the media that Médine S.E. Company Limited celebrated its 100th anniversary on September 9, 2011.

All Mauritians know that September 9 is above all the anniversary of Father Jacques Desiré Laval – ‘The apostle of the poor’.

Only immediate family and close friends know that September 9 is also the anniversary of Alexis Desiré Fernand Leclézio. Obviously, Desiré was one of our father’s chosen names at baptism to honor the ‘Apostle of the poor’.

Although our father played a leading role in improving the lot of the poor through the development of Médine and F.U.E.L., he would never have been so presumptuous to think that the present day management of Médine picked September 9 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Medine in his honor.

That must have been a mere coincidence.

But our father must be rejoicing, and so are we, to note that our Honorable Prime Minister remembered him on his birthday and took time to cite him during his intervention at the 100th anniversary celebration of an enterprise our father did so very much for.

That was no coincidence! And, that is who and what made the difference.

We believe that a higher spirit binds extraordinary leaders together in their universal quest for the common good of all.

Thus Father Jacques Desiré Laval was driven by his strong desire to secure and ensure the common good of all Mauritians starting from the very bottom of the ladder, working with and through all those that were deliberately excluded.

Sir Seewoosagur was relentless in his search for a solution that would guarantee the common good of all. Among his countless other achievements, free education for all was part of that solution. Through education, the father of our nation led all Mauritians across the great divide away from the deserts of exclusion.

Who would ever know today that, as a culmination of all his centralizations and realizations, our father researched long and hard what would be the best acronym to tie West to East – Medine to F.U.E.L into one? To the ordinary folks, WEAL stood for: West East Association Limited. But to our father, WEAL had to be the symbol of who he was and what he stood for. After many a sleepless night and much research, he finally settled for the acronym WEAL. Eureka! Our father had found that, in old English, WEAL means ‘The common good’. Indeed a modern day check through the free on line dictionary (not available to our father in his days) confirms the meaning of WEAL as follows: “1. Prosperity; happiness: in weal and woe.2. The welfare of the community; the general good: the public weal.

Today, every Mauritian should rejoice to see with what integrity and to what courageous extent Navin will go to, in order to ensure the common good of all Mauritians, regardless of status, color or creed.

In his strenuous and perseverant efforts for the common good, Navin does not only want to tie West to East but also North to South. Through the democratization of the economy, Navin is continuously striving to create an all encompassing society where every Mauritian will have an equal opportunity.

Navin’s vision of the ‘Mauritius Incorporated’ of tomorrow will by far transcend the limits of an antiquated colonial, jealously and selfishly guarded ‘Mauritius Company Limited’ of yesterday designed to limit the benefits of our fast expanding economy to the company of a very few.

However, for Navin's vision to become reality, it is imperative that all Mauritians learn from one another. In his book, ‘N’ayez pas peur’, John Paul II pounds on the fact that more aspects of our daily lives unite us rather than divide us. Thus, John Paul II exhorts us to embrace and adopt, as our own, the very best that each diverse component of the society we live in has best to offer.

We are lucky to live in a society where, at least some members of certain communities take to heart the dreams of their extraordinary leaders. But it is only when true and thourough Mauritianism permeates through the daily actions of every Mauritian that we will have a just and equal opportunity society that will be an example to the globalized world.

We all have lessons to learn from the profound words of our leader during his intervention at the 100 year anniversary of Medine S.E. Company Limited. Unfortunately, while some appear to be far better and more genuine students than others, some members of certain communities choose to remain imprisoned within the confines of their narrow spirit, their ‘privileges’ of old and their self serving interests.

As an example, on August 15th, the only two Mauritians to wish my wife and I a happy feast day were two non Catholics, namely Mr. J. Monebhurrun of the companies Division in Rodrigues and Dr. Vickas Gopee of Rose Belle hospital.

In turn, on the occasion of the feast of Ganesh Chaturthi on September 2, our brother Fernand Leclezio Jr. followed the outstanding example of Navin, the leader of all Mauritians. In keeping with Navin’s dream and our father’s lessons, Fernand innocently called, among others, one of our cousins to wish him a happy feast day. In a show of extremely poor judgment and regrettable narrow mindedness, so remote from any Mauritianism ideology urged by our leader, our cousin lambasted poor Fernand for daring to wish him a happy feast day concerning a God he will never choose to know!!!

By exemplary contrast, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Medine a week later, in his intervention, Navin endeavored once again to set a wonderful example for all Mauritians to adopt and follow, in order to achieve an all inclusive equal opportunity society. Navin chose to reach out to all Mauritians when he quoted our father : « s’il y a de la gloire, il y en aura pour tout le monde mais s’il y a un désastre je veux être le seul à en souffrir ». « Quelle belle leçon à ceux qui aspirent à devenir de vrais leaders », a souligné le chef de l’État.

In a constant show of most unselfish motivation, it is very obvious that Navin has fully mastered that lesson.

Navin has often revealed how he is humbly fully aware that he could not have mastered that lesson alone. Navin knows that in his relentless quest for a just and equitable Mauritian society, he is inspired by a higher spirit that binds together and unites all those who strive for the common good. That is the Godly spirit of Love and commitment passed down to some of us by our fathers.

I believe that it is that same Godly spirit that can influence each and every one of us in our daily responses, even to the seemingly most ordinary events of our daily lives.

Thus, when the present day president of Medine called my brother Fernand, not to invite him to the 100 year anniversary celebration, but rather to ask him for a photo of our father to possibly publish it in some anniversary book, Fernand was inspired to refer our cousin to the Mauritius Times, saying that, to his knowledge, the Mauritius Times had the best photo of our father.

That was no coincidence. I proudly repeat what I have written in the past. Sir Satcam Boolell, himself a great leader, once referred to Sir Seewoosagur, to Bickramsingh Ramlallah and to our father as the people who had marked him indelibly as being great leaders.

The spirit of those great leaders is passed on down the line to the next generation. Fernand instinctively referred the Medine president to The Mauritius Times. Not having seen a copy of the commemorative book, we do not know if the president of Medine ever sought or obtained our father’s picture from the Mauritius Times.

But it was ever so more meaningful, and obviously very much through that all combining spirit of extraordinary leaders, that the daughter of Bickramsingh Ramlallah, Sadhna Ramlallah, proved to be the only one within family or friend circle, to take the time to advise us that ‘Le Mauricien’ had carried an article on the 100 year anniversary celebration of Medine and that our Prime Minister had cited our father during his intervention!

Furthermore watching the news on MBC TV on September 10, 2011, Fernand and I were comforted to hear the present day president of Medine recognize that Medine is today one of the biggest land owners in Mauritius. It may have been fitting for him to also disclose who was the visionary who accomplished the feat of consistently and laboriously expanding the Medine factory area square foot by square foot?

Dear Navin, as you well know, by judiciously and repeatedly climbing over every mountain in order to invest in more and more real estate, years ago, our father set the course for the common good of all the population of Mauritius and particularly so for those living within the Medine and F.U.E.L. factory areas.

By comparison, as if any were possible, who is today consistently divesting Medine of much of the prized land acquired years ago? Is such a policy truly for the common good of all or mostly for the benefit of a restricted number of Medine shareholders?

But, then, we understand that while some prefer to forget important historical facts, lest they be reminded of their own mediocrity, true leaders choose to publicly remember details and to cite great leaders in order to help all aspire to great leadership.

Dear Navin, Fernand and I are moved to tears as we thank you for choosing to publicly remember our father and his guiding spirit on his birthday.

Now, that our father has left so much behind to be fondly remembered by, I thank you for always remembering to include Fernand in all the major celebrations of the Labour Party and for inviting him to share the podium with your winning team on countless occasions.

Your tender loving care towards all Mauritians, including the marginalized, for whatever reason – That is what makes the difference. That is what sets you apart as an extraordinary leader. That is what empowers you to make a worthwhile difference in the life of so many in small or big ways!

Your astounding memory, reaching in the remote past history of our land and all its great leaders, regardless of their specific community is what also allows you to see on the other side of the mountains.

As you said before, we all arrived in Mauritius on different ships. But it will be only when we all, willingly, board the ‘Mauritius Incorporated’ ship, for the common good of all that we will have a true blue chip. A blue chip with an infinite amount of human principal and good will to be traded and further recognized worldwide as a new standard of values. A blue chip that can only be led by your staunch principles of unselfish exchange of ideas, power and finance for the common good of all.

It is only when every sailor on the ‘Mauritius Incorporated’ regardless of rank, acts, under your leadership, as an apostle of the poor and marginalized, that every Mauritian will be rich not only materially but above all spiritually. Then and only then will every Mauritian, by his own actions, deserve to become a full fledge shareholder of ‘Mauritius Incorporated’ so as to fully participate in the country’s overall success.

May ‘Mauritius Incorporated’ become known down history lane as the brain child of your creative genius. It is very obvious that your own organized thinking process is always on the watch for any minute detail that can and will make a worthy difference in the life of every Mauritian. Indeed, some affirm that, awake or asleep, your mind ticks away like a fine watch to mark each precious minute of your supernatural perseverance and drive that is solely devoted to the improvement of the lot of each and every Mauritian.

Dear Navin, may all limiting barriers to the realization of your dream be torn down urgently through the upcoming budget. It will undoubtedly set new horizons for the sun to rise warmly on all Mauritians.

In an effort to tear down unnecessary road blocks and overcome distracting forces, who would have the courage and vision today, within the ranks of private industry, to contribute meaningfully to the rebirth of the ‘Advance Newspaper’ for the overall advancement of every aspect of Mauritian society through factual, patriotic and truthful reporting?

May numerous future generations of Mauritians remember you well over a hundred years from now for your countless achievements for the common good of our nation.

As the one and only worthy leader of our country, of our industry, of our economy and of our plural society, thank you for always making such a powerful difference at each significant opportunity!

Dearest Kaitlyn,

March 4, 1993! When you, our first grand child, was born – We were there! What a memorable event!

When you were baptized – We were there! Another memorable day!

When you made your First Communion – We were there in communion with you!

When you were younger – we were always there! Especially when you lived with us – What a blessing that was!

As proud grand parents, we loved being there to watch you grow – At home, at school, on the sports’ field; wherever you were, you always made us so proud!

On June 9 2011! We will sadly not be there. For health, financial and other reasons known to God alone and beyond my control, when you graduate from High school, Nanny and I will not be there physically to openly manifest our pride.

But from the time I learnt that you were to graduate on June 9, 2011, I have been there spiritually by your side. Daily, I have revisited the past and tried to read your future.

Beginning with your birth, the past is full of numerous happy events. Some of those highlighted your intelligence and kindness and spoke of the bright future in store for you.

I often think how you showed much logic and good judgment from a very young age.

Do you remember? Once we were in front of the Virgin Mary sanctuary that I had built in our Bellevue yard – I asked you: “Kaitlyn, could you do a clay model of the back of my hand?” I proceeded to leave an imprint of the palm of my hand in the rose quartz bed as a sample for you. You immediately told me: “But Bopa, if I used that as a model that would not be the back of your hand!” I was amazed and together, we laughed so loud at my stupidity!

On May 7th 1999, you were only six years old. You made a picture of me preaching in church. I hold a cross in my right hand and a candle in the left hand. I have cherished that drawing of yours ever since. I keep it safely in my Bible and you inspire me through it to this day! Thank you!

Speaking of hands, I often recall how Nanny enjoyed having you as a tender loving and caring, nine year old, grand daughter massaging her hands while Nanny lay there immobilized by ALS! On June 9th, from heaven, in turn Nanny will be proudly holding your hand on the podium.

You have filled the hearts of four generations with joy. Your Great Grand mother always loved to cradle you in her arms and hands while rocking you back and forth on her rocking chair. Now, your Great grand granny, and Nanny from heaven and I join your parents to cradle you in our arms and hold your hands at this significant junction of your life.

We ask Jesus to continue to guide you and to let His love continue to shine through you as brightly as it has done over the last 18 years.

Confusing your crystal clear heart with a crystal ball, I get a crystal clear reading of your future.

Loving, you will be always.

Caring, you will always know how to be.

Compassionate you have for ever been and will continue to be.

A ‘One of a kind’, kind grand daughter, daughter, sister, student, nurse, wife, mother and grand mother you will be throughout well into eternity!

I wish I were there to see you graduate. With the money due to me, I could well afford to take some risks.

But, obstructing justice through any number of vile tactics has empowered Michael L Darland aka Mike Darland of Bellevue, WA. to inflict yet another irreparable damage upon our family life.

Sorry I had to bring that up. But we need to be constantly reminded that life is made of good and evil.

While we must learn to deal with both, we just have to choose on which side of life we want to be.

Remain who you are. Remain on the best side of life. Never let greed corrupt your crystal clear heart. Greed and vanity can only lead to a miserable life. No matter how much money the lowly and greedy get to stash away they endlessly pursue a constantly eluding happiness through all the wrong avenues.

They are to be pitied and prayed for.

However, I learnt a valuable lesson from all my efforts to obtain justice in time to be able to fly by your side on graduation day. I know not to rely on timely justice on earth. It does not exist.

Rather throughout your life trust in the goodness of Jesus. He alone knows all the paths you must travel through to reach your ultimate reward in heaven. Keep friends of like mind and heart. Shun the haughty and greedy.

Abide by God’s will alone. Whenever appropriate, find strength and courage by humbly repeating the most powerful lines of ‘Our Father’: “Let Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven…” It is only then that earth becomes your heaven. No amount of evil can then suffocate your inner Godly joy.

You can then fully submit yourself to God’s agenda. You will always feel totally content through the knowledge and assurance that God knows best what is best over the long term for you.

Congratulations dearest Kaitlyn on always choosing the good side of life. God will continue to reward you abundantly.

God knew what He was doing when He blessed you with your outstanding character. Keep putting all your trust in Him.

God certainly knows what He is doing by allowing you to walk in your father and mother’s footsteps at the first class Jesuit led Gonzaga University.

And only God knows how, although seemingly so far away, He is filling my heart with pride and joy at the thought that, in turn, your parents will soon be driving their daughter, our grand daughter, to this renowned Jesuit, Catholic institution named after Saint Aloysius of Gonzaga. In a most present way, I will be there in spirit to pray for your success at Saint Aloysius church on campus on graduation day. I love that church and all it stands for.

With tears in my eyes, I recall as if it were yesterday, the day when Nanny and I drove to Spokane to see, your mother, our dear Lynda fly off the nest to attend Gonzaga University. On that day I prayed at St. Aloysius church. By consistently and continuously blessing us so much through so many years, I know God always listens to our sincere prayers.

Pray to value your education at that center of higher learning to its full worth.

As you are about to graduate with honors from High school and be off to University, God’s agenda has allowed Eve and I to deeply appreciate first hand how some people cherish education to its utmost value. It inspires me to write the following lines to you.

A few days ago we were amazed to witness first hand how much a very dear friend of ours was willing to leave behind, how much she was readily prepared to sacrifice for the sake of higher education!

It made me remark to Eve that where and when education is ‘a way of life’ it is too often taken for granted and therefore its true value is so diluted that it is no longer fully appreciated.

In the past I have sent your parents pictures of us with our friend Doctor Reshmee Boodoo. Reshmee has often told us about the many sacrifices her whole family made to be able to send her to University to study medicine. Some of her stories will bring tears to your eyes if and when they do not cause you to burst out crying.

Education was seen by her and her whole family as THE only way out of exclusion and THE way away from past generations of poverty.

So, all her family members chipped in for Reshmee to become a medical doctor. She is now an excellent and brilliant doctor working hard to repay her family for all the financial help they provided thanks to the many sacrifices they went through in their intensive quest for her success.

Eve and I are often bewildered when she tells us about her own sacrifices in turn to pay back those who carried her on their shoulders when she needed them to do provide her with a priceless education and a degree in medicine. As a doctor, she often starts work at 9:00AM. She then works through a whole day, a whole night and a whole day again – That is 36 hours non stop – Just to pay back!!!

However that plateau of achievement did not satisfy her ambition to be all she can be for her sake and that of her family. She craved to study a lot more to become a specialist.

A few months ago, she called us all excited. There were two scholarships available to doctors wishing to further their education. There were many doctors applying. Reshmee jumped on the plane to go and be interviewed. Upon her return, she said: “Wow! I did the best I could! But there were so many applicants. God will do what is best for my husband and I.” She had only recently got married!

Believe it or not, Reshmee called us again on Thursday May 26. She was elated and asked us over to share the tremendous news. She had just received a letter from the Mauritian Ministry of Health advising that only two doctors had been granted the prized scholarship. Reshmee was one of them.

Now get ready for this!!! She had to IMMEDIATELY abandon all her possessions to the care of friends and co workers. Her lovely car and everything else she owned would have to be shipped from Rodrigues to family in Mauritius by friends.

Reshmee had to be on the plane to fly to Mauritius very early on Friday May 27 for an interview with the Ministry of health in the morning and one with the Indian Embassy in the afternoon.

Thereafter Reshmee would have to fly to India on the first available flight to register at the Benares University by no later than May 31st in order to begin classes on June 1st!!!

Fortunately her husband could accompany her. On May 30th they were flying together to India. He will look for an apartment for her while she attends classes! Thereafter he will be returning to his work in Mauritius while she studies for at least three years!!! When I asked him what did he and the whole family think of it all happening so quickly? Avinash calmly replied: “What a wonderful opportunity for us all that Reshmee can become a specialist.” The sacrifices that it would obviously all entail were most certainly not in the forefront. Only education was the whole family’s focal point!!!

That kind of commitment to education can only come from those who value it with all their being for the well being of ALL!

Dearest Kaitlyn, be committed to your education to be the best nurse you can be. Be committed to your education to be a great doctor if and when God so inspires you to be. Be committed to your education to be a loving and caring specialist if and when you are led so to be.

Whatever you end up being, I selfishly pray that some day I will receive care from your hands.

Reshmee will be specializing in ophthalmology. Three years from now, Reshmee will help people see better and farther.

I hope and pray that this message will help you see better to which farthest summit God is leading you to.

From exile, forced there by health and finance, Eve joins me to wish you the very best throughout your life till we meet again for eternity.

Fly… Fly… Fly as far as your heart and God will lead you…

P.S I pray and hope that God will grant me enough years that you will be there by my dying bed some day. As a nurse, a doctor or a specialist, it will not only be to massage love into my hands but to offer all the TLC medical care you will be famous for!

Walking across a desert, Moses saw ‘I Am’ in a burning bush.

My New Year’s wish is that we all find ‘I Am’ in every present moment of our lives.

In the presence of ‘I Am’ little matters who we were or who we will be... we are!

In the presence of ‘I Am’ we will always know who we are in the present!

May we never be so busy that we miss the present of the presence of ‘I Am’…in an inert rock,

'I Am' in the beauty of an inert celestial rock.

in a speechless sea star,

The shepherds saw a star and found 'I Am'. Can we find 'I Am' in this sea star?

in a flower or in a thinking human being.

'I Am' never fades in the color of a bright or dark flower.

'I Am' in the wealth of innocence of a poor street child.

‘I Am’ is omnipresent. He can be found in any vision, in any smell and in all feelings. Even in the sound of silence or of the tumultuous sea we can take time to taste ‘I Am’ on earth and from heaven.

If we allow ourselves to be so busy that we miss the presence of ‘I Am’ as He touches every moment of our lives, we will for ever walk across a barren desert!

My wish for you all in 2011 is to take time daily to look, smell, hear, feel and taste ‘I Am’ wherever you are… whenever!

Whenever - Wherever, we can all fly to 'I Am' on the wings of His pure spirit.

In utter wonder, you will ponder that because God Is – I am… always happy to be here, happy to be me, happy to be wealthy, well and wise in the spirit of 'I Am'.

The light and love of ‘I Am’ all around me guarantees that total happiness…

The light of 'I Am', 'The Rock', is always searching for us through empty holes.

In Memoriam Fernand Leclezio.

We have come here to praise Fernand and not to bury him!

All the good he did could never be interred with his bones!

He was a loving Father.

He has done so very much for so very many throughout his life.

Our father’s motto: “Do what you feel is best! Never expect a thank you. Thus you will always be happy to have done your best and you will avoid disappointments”.

Like a visionary admiral of the fleet, our father has guided many a ship of faith to safe harbor.

His memory is our rudder whenever and wherever we pull up anchor.

Thanks to our father and forefathers we have been well equipped to sail on through calm or stormy seas, across blue or dark grey skies.

Whenever our human nature causes us to wonder if we are wandering, we must look back as far as we can so we can see the furthest ahead.

When we look back, we see the solid granite monuments left behind to anchor us into our Catholic faith and our family traditions.

The crosses above the granite sepulchers of six generations of Leclezios are our frames of reference. Those crosses we learn to carry, symbol of our family’s faith, unite us all on earth and in heaven.

Pope John Paul II spoke of the importance of visiting our dead ones spiritually daily. The Pope suggested that if we could not go physically to the various cemeteries where our loved ones lie, we must spiritually do so while visualizing them and/or their grave sites.

I have often visited our dead ones at their grave site physically whenever I could. I cherish the photos above. Nowadays, I love to pray over all those tombs that I can only visit spiritually from Rodrigues.

Fortunately, I believe that in heaven people neither have the time nor the inclination to formalize themselves with form, proximity and location.

Otherwise, there could be very odd contrasts between the land that is dear to a person on earth and in what land his/her dead body lands after death.

Where our father and mother’s remains lie, speaks very loudly to that.

Our father had prepared his family’s eternal home in the land of his forefathers by his parents’ side. After having a sepulcher built in the family’s traditional style, our father made a special trip to proudly show to his most trusted collaborator, Philip Scott his final home for ever.

Yet, in the end, our father’s ashes were buried in State College, Pennsylvania. There, our father and mother lie physically far from their ancestors and far from most of their children.

This teaches us that the river of emotions born out of death is an inescapable reality of life. That river often carries us to unmapped shores.

Regardless of where our bodies land after death, we are free. Free to share as one body, united in Christ’s love, the unifying meal of peace and ultimate joy God has prepared for us all to savor at the eternal table of plenty. That table is in a land void of any worldly landmarks.

At that table of plenty we are strictly fed by the spirit of God and not according to any recipes of man.

From that table, generations of past ancestors have fed us, the recipes that have made us who we are today.

Since my return to Mauritius, I have reacquainted myself with the immense debt of gratitude we owe to our father and ancestors. In Mauritius, in their life time, our earthly forefathers and father prepared room for us all to reside at the end of our lives on earth. How grateful we should be to them to have so meaningfully planned for our future residence, in their past.

Thus, in the present, it is most meaningful for Eve, Godda and I to honor the past love and wisdom of our ancestors for the benefit of future generations.

Our traditions testify to our love and respect of our family character and signature. I hope and pray future generations learn much from this letter and their visits to Mauritius.

Eternal love and gratitude are the hallmarks of true members of the Leclezio family.

In heaven, that kind of love blossoms not by our human will but by the will of God. How wonderful it would be if it could be likewise on earth!

Then, and only then God’s Will, would be done on earth as it is in heaven!

Until then, that Leclezio blood, wherever it is, cold or warm, dried out or still flowing, screams out to me not to let go of such rich family traditions. A tradition deeply rooted in the love and respect of the past, the present and the future. That Leclezio blood summons me to pray, for family continuity, even through distance and diversity, for eternity. I gladly do so with the spirits of all the family saints whose bones, in whatever state, are entombed within those many known granite sepulchers of generations of Leclezios. I find it particularly easy to do so within that venerated Leclezio sanctuary in the St. Pierre es Liens cemetery. But it is also important to pray for the entire community of the unknown all over the world by the foot of the cross that unites us all.

That tradition is to be preserved on earth till the end of times when we are all united in heaven through God’s love.

I cannot ignore the cry and the respectful wisdom, our ancestors addressed to past and future generations through the erection of such lasting memorials. Nor should we ever depart from our century’s old, family heritage. Their love, their wisdom and their foresight has ensured that over two hundred years later, they are still dearly recognized, remembered and highly revered by some of the members of their progeny.

We can export those family traditions to ‘new worlds’ but for our family values to last and to remain healthy; we are duty bound to religiously honor, fertilize and meticulously water with prayer showers, our family roots where they are buried most deeply in our native soil.

Indeed, profound respect for and love of the traditions our ancestors established in Mauritius, make me commit to preserve the spiritual and material values of the symbolic monuments our ancestors have left behind for us to pray by and pay tribute to.

I am moved to do so spiritually through prayer and communion with past and future generations. I commit to do so materially by attending to the maintenance of those monuments of the past. Our family cared enough to live behind for our benefit. We should care enough to maintain them. I pray and hope that the generations that follow will go on doing so.

For, when God and our ancestors call to us, their children, grand children, great grand children etc. from the grave and from heaven, to honor their memory, we should never ask: “Why me?” We should feel privileged and prayerfully, humbly, graciously and joyfully answer the call!

I repeat, those tabernacles of the Leclezio blood, bones, dust and spirit are the rudders of our future.

I recognize that there is a world of difference, indeed, an abyss, between a transient culture caring little about roots and a society steeped in tradition. We are fortunate to possess and absolutely must cling to such a heritage wherever we are in today’s world.

Those rock solid crosses are testimony to our religion founded on rock, to our belief in the power of the cross, to our belief in the ever lasting life and the resurrection. We must be good stewards of those beliefs that lead to the only one true and everlasting wealth.

As good stewards, we must pray that God and our ancestors allow us to read, understand and accept their agenda throughout our lives.

As I have already mentioned above, our father’s closest collaborator, who he loved like a son, Philip Scott from F.U.E.L., had told me a few times how our father had one day driven from Moka to F.U.E.L. to pick him up. On their way from Flacq towards Moka/St. Pierre, our father told Philip: “I want to show you the house that I have built.” Philip automatically thought that our father had built a new house in Eureka. He told our dad: “I did not know that you were building a home.”

To Philip’s great surprise, when they arrived in St. Pierre, a few miles from Eureka, Moka, our father headed for the St. Pierre cemetery. Once there, our father asked Philip to follow him in the cemetery. A short distance from the entrance, our father stopped, pointed to an imposing sepulcher to his left and proudly declared: “That is my residence for eternity.”

The Bible also tells us that our heavenly Father has prepared a home in heaven with lots of room for us all. History and tradition tell us that, likewise, our earthly fathers have cared to prepare a home with lots of room for us on earth.

It is up to us to decide whether we want to follow tradition and gratefully move into the homes prepared for us on earth and in heaven by our Fathers.

It is worth noting that Grandfather Louis’ tomb houses three generations of Leclezios. God has already written in His agenda how many generations will reside in our own father’s tomb over the years.

Our life belongs to God. He provides for us from His table with the help of all our departed loved ones.

The Godly meal, we share closely with our ancestors without even realizing it, is the food that keeps our family’s religious traditions alive on earth. Some day, like a butler, I wish to dish out that food from the eternal table of heaven to family around earthly tables. Thus, I would ensure that our progeny can eat and drink from the generous Godly cornucopia and fountain of life and family traditions. That is the only cornucopia and fountain that is sure to strengthen us and to quench our thirst as we cross some of the earthly deserts that lead to heavenly eternity.

One dies a little upon leaving a place. One resurrects much upon returning.

I am thankful to God to have granted me the time and the discernment needed to evaluate, comprehend the lessons taught by our fathers and reach the conclusions I am happy to share with you today.

As I wander across time and across the earth through all the green pastures God has blessed me to visit, I pray that God grants me the years and the means to be God’s guide to lead you to discover more ‘new/old worlds’ on earth until the day we can all be united for ever in the City of God.

St. Augustin said that the world is like a book and those who have not traveled across various worlds have only read one page.

After much traveling on earth, I realize that in that blessed paradise of heavenly bliss, spirits share a bond of such absolute love that it transcends all human notions. Thus I believe that in heaven, through our union with the God of pure love, we are united to each other and to all alike without any humanly feelings of selfishness, possessiveness, vanity or jealousy.

Indeed, the God that created us all with infinite love can transcend human emotions, matter, time and space to unite us all in perfect love.

I am most thankful that God’s agenda provided for me to be in Mauritius just before All Saints and All Souls Day in 2010. During my time in Mauritius, I am glad to have been guided to respectfully honor my Great, great grand father Eugene and Grand Pa’s sepulchers by having them cleaned after decades of pitiful and shameful neglect.

P.S. As you know, for many years now, it has been and it still is very important for me to pray over the pictures of the tombs of all our dear ones. It has assured a means of communication and a source of inspiration in the present, with our past spiritual and corporal DNA in heaven.

For those of you who wish to follow the recommendations of Pope John Paul II and my example, I suggest that whenever you feel called to share a special moment with our dear ones in the everlasting ‘ultimate new world harboring the eternal City of God’ you can refer to what those pictures represent to act as a rudder to guide you to our loved ones wherever they lie.

Note that the majestic cross that rests above the ‘Famille Leclezio’ sepulcher was carved by hand out of solid rock over 150 years ago. I consider it to be a priceless and irreplaceable work of art. That cross speaks to the importance, Francois, our first pioneering ancestor to land in Mauritius in 1792 attached to creating a long lasting beacon of traditions and family values in his ‘new world’ on earth prior to reaching his new world in heaven. It was obviously most important for him to leave his mark on future generations. I am deeply grateful for his example and that rich heritage he has left behind for us to follow.

As you well know, walking in the foot prints of pioneering Francois, in the US, I dug in our resources to commission and erect, with the help of God, the memorial at the Holyrood Cemetery.

As we journey through life, we all find, carry and leave crosses at the various stations we visit.

During our lifetime, to the extent we trustfully submit to the Will of God, we find the necessary strength to accept our crosses graciously. After we die, we lie under the weight of our crosses. In life, as in death, we must proclaim our faith in the power of the cross over us.

I believe that the higher we elevate our crosses, the higher our crosses will elevate us and guide those who follow us.

The crosses we lie under after death reflect our acceptance of the way of the cross that led us to eternal life. Therefore, may our progeny, in turn, carry their individual crosses while cherishing and protecting the faith of our fathers along their ways of the cross across their stations in life.

May all of the above testify to what I hope and pray will be the long surviving heritage our forefathers left behind.

Then, those who follow after us will also joyfully proclaim this one Roman Catholic faith in the resurrection. By the power of the cross, that faith has led many family generations through the eye of the needle. May that faith continue to guide many more generations through ages to come.

May those monuments to our faith be beacons of light that beckon family, friends and strangers alike, walking through any cemetery, in any world, to stop by and pray for all those who there under lie until the ultimate ‘Resurrection Day’ when we can all shed worldly forlornness to experience the fullness of eternal life!

Toi qui souffre, saches que, qui que tu sois, où que tu sois:

Leclézio, tu es le sang de notre sang.
Et quand une créature de notre sang souffre,
Toutes les créatures de notre sang souffrent avec toi.

Sans ta souffrance, je souffrirais déjà moins dans ce monde.
Mais avec, par et en ta souffrance, je souffre d’avantage de te voir souffrir.

Alors, tout notre sang le sent si fort que tout notre sang entame ta souffrance!

Thank God, thank Francois for setting an example. Long before the world thought globally, Francois recognized the importance of being at least bilingual on the globe. After the British conquered Mauritius, Francois personally developed an English dictionary for his children while he also taught them English grammar!

Leclézio, do you feel better already?

Is it not amazing what our ancestors can and indeed will do for us if and when we choose to remember them?

Therefore, pray that over the next 155 years your descendants may be at least as numerous as Francois’ are today. Remember how one of Francois’ grand sons took to heart God’s command: “Go… Multiply…” Henry did in deed. Thus Henry and Jenny were abundantly blessed with seventeen children!

Pray also that some of your descendants in the year 2161 will still cherish their catholic faith as much as Francois did from his baptism day in 1771 and as much as some of his descendants still do today! Then, just as we pray to Francois today to intercede for us, let us hope that likewise some of our descendants will pray for and or to us 155 years from now!

Leclézio descendants: We must always remember who are our ascendants?

Je te connais seulement à travers la MBC/TV.

Tu ne me connais pas.

Permets moi donc de me présenter. Je suis Louis Leclezio. Fernand Leclezio est mon père. Claude Noel, un des administrateurs de Savannah, est mon parrain.

A l’époque, mon papa était considéré comme étant un visionnaire et un avant-gardiste dans l’industrie sucrière et dans ses relations avec tous les Mauriciens.

Ce constat se justifie pleinement aujourd’hui quand on réalise que papa a été le précurseur de la centralisation des usines sucrières. Une politique embrassée pleinement aujourd’hui par le Gouvernement dirigé par notre brillant Premier Ministre, l’Union Européenne et les propriétaires sucriers. Du ciel, papa et nous ses enfants ici bas, sommes heureux de voir qu’il y a 60 ans, papa fut le fondateur de trois des quatre usines qui restent opérationnelles aujourd’hui.

Le rôle de papa dans la centralisation de F.U.E.L., dans l’est du pays, et la contribution de papa dans le développement et l’expansion, à travers la fermeture de Trianon par exemple, de Médine dans l’ouest, sont bien connus. Mais dans le Sud, concernant la structure de Savannah, son empreinte est moins reconnue. Les archives de la compagnie pourraient peut être te révéler les faits à ce sujet. Pour honorer la fondation de Savannah par papa, quoique Claude Noel ne fût pas un membre de notre famille, il éprouva le désir d’être, non seulement administrateur de Savannah, mais aussi d’être mon parrain sur les fonds baptismaux en 1946.

Papa nous disait souvent comment il s’était assuré que Claude recevrait une compensation nettement supérieure à la sienne, et ce, avec le consentement du board de direction de F.U.E.L. et de Médine.

C’est cet esprit de générosité et de justice envers les autres, les plus petits comme les plus grands, qui, selon papa, faisait sa force, celle de son entourage et surtout celle du pays.

Cela fut reconnu par plusieurs membres du Gouvernement Travailliste pendant des décennies.

Pour sa part, le père Guy Le Juge de Segrais, dans un sermon adressé à papa et maman lors de leur noces d’argent, faisait aussi ressortir : « Trop souvent, les industriels ne cherchent qu’à mesurer leur succès par rapport aux profits de leurs entreprises. Mais vous, cher Fernand, c’est avant tout le bien être de tous, que vous rechercher. C’est pourquoi vous avez toujours visé beaucoup plus haut que la médiocrité. L’esprit des entrepreneurs sortant tous du même moule n’était pas le vôtre. Vous avez compris mieux que tous et vous vous êtes assuré que c’est seulement lorsque vous, le patron, vous oeuvrez dans l’intérêt de vos artisans et de vos laboureurs, que vous travaillez en concert avec l’Esprit de Dieu, notre Créateur. En cette année 1961, alors que vous célébrez vos noces d’argent, l’église universelle célèbre le 70eme anniversaire de l’encyclique ‘Rerum Novarum’ du Pape Léon XIII. Cette encyclique fut reconnue comme étant la charte des travailleurs.

Mon cher Fernand, quand je passe en revue la charte de vos accomplissements, le plus édifiant et celui qui vous élève le plus, est bien ce que vous avez fait pour améliorer les conditions de vie de vos travailleurs, en leur fournissant des maisons confortables.

En ce faisant, vous avez répondu généreusement à l’appel de l’encyclique d’un Pape, qui lui aussi, sortait de l’ordinaire.

Vous méritez, à travers cet accomplissement gigantesque sur notre toute petite île, la reconnaissance de l’Eglise Catholique Universelle.

J’aimerais souligner que, personnellement, je reconnais que le monde entier a bien besoin de capitaliste catholique visionnaire comme vous pour combattre le communisme dans nos villages, sur notre petite île et dans le monde entier. »

Cher Jacques, depuis mon retour au pays et après un tour d’horizon, autre que notre honorable Premier Ministre et son rôle prépondérant auprès de l’U.E en faveur du pays et de l’industrie sucrière, je me suis souvent demandé, qui, aujourd’hui, strictement dans l’industrie, occupe un peu la place que papa occupait dans le passé.

Apres t’avoir brièvement observé à la TV, tu me parais être celui qui pourrait porter le flambeau visionnaire et avant-gardiste de papa.

Je dis bien ‘parais être…’. Quand tu m’auras convaincu que tu ne te retourneras pas pour mordre la main qui a, il y a plus de 60 ans de cela, tout planifié pour nourrir tous équitablement et non encourager la gourmandise de certains, quand tu auras prouvé que tu souscris pleinement à l’idéologie d’un des fondateurs de Savannah, alors je serais heureux de dire : « Tu es le digne porteur du flambeau… »

Ta contribution dans le juste dénouement des négociations entre l’industrie sucrière et les artisans et laboureurs viendront me confirmer qui tu es vraiment.

Je termine en te laissant savoir qu’aujourd’hui, je ne suis que le fils de Fernand et sans aucun intérêt financier dans l’industrie sucrière. J’ai investi le temps nécessaire pour t’écrire cette lettre

Cher Jacques, j’ai essayé de t’appeler à ton bureau et sur ton portable, mais en vain. Je reconnais qu’en cette période, tu as beaucoup d’autres chats à fouetter et aussi à caresser.

J’ai tout de même trouvé cela une drôle de coïncidence, qu’alors que l’Esprit me poussait à te contacter lundi matin, tu étais à la messe. Cela me motive encore plus à te contacter et à publier cette lettre, en espérant qu’un jour, un prêtre ou un évêque t’adressera les mêmes éloges que le père Guy le Juge de Segrais adressait à papa.

Court Injunction against First American Corporation

Should Bank of America and/or New York attorney General, Andy Cuomo and/or Hagens Berman and/or numerous other plaintiffs seek an injunction against the First American Corporation?

In my opinion, the Court should be asked to prevent the First American Corporation from splitting and spinning off assets until the extent of damages real and punitive for which the First American Corporation will be deemed liable under the various suits are established.

When a worm is split in two it wriggles. The more it wriggles, the muddier the water gets. The muddier the water gets, the harder it is to pin either end of the worm down.

The splitting of First American Corporation is rigged up to accomplish just that.

The First American Corporation - 'Liars Title insurance'

First American Corporation’s track record:

Liars title insurance is a long established way of life at the First American Corporation.

In 1996 First American Title adopted the motto: ‘Insure anything – Litigate everything.

In the same year, First American Title Insurance admitted taking a considerable risk. It issued a ‘liars title insurance policy’ just to make a couple of thousand bucks and secure future business.

Has anything changed since?

According to law suits filed in 2010, First American did not hesitate in the mid 2000s to issue numerous ‘liars title insurance policies’ to make hundreds of thousands of dollars and secure big business.

The First American Corporation historical track record:

In 1996 no lender would lend money to my partner on our property without my signature.

A hard money lender agreed to make a loan to my partner subject to getting title insurance.

My partner sought title insurance behind my back from various title companies. All declined to issue title insurance without my knowledge and signature.

Only First American Title agreed to insure the loan subject to an indemnity agreement from my partner.

First American prepared and obtained the highly secret indemnity agreement from my partner prior to insuring the loan.

Obviously First American failed to disclose the existence of the indemnity agreement to the lender.

The lender made the loan.

When I found that my property had been illegally encumbered, I asked the lender what possessed him to make such a loan without my signature?

The hard money lender replied: “Why not? We knew you were of record. Indeed, First American provided us with a title report showing your interest in the property. We realized that First American was willing to insure a lie. There was smoke all over the deal. But First American was prepared to insure our loan. We would have been stupid not to buy the insurance policy. We bought the insurance and made the loan. How could we lose? It was like we were getting full coverage insurance after a fire had started!

Of course once the fire had engulfed everything, First American refused to live up to the considerable risk they deliberately took.

First American ignored and denied my claims and the lender’s claims. First American simply refused to pay. To make matters worse, First American did not even dare enforce the secret indemnity agreement they had secured to insure a blatant lie.

I consulted a leading title insurance attorney. After reviewing the case, Mr. Jerome Lasky of Moses and Singer, New York issued a letter of opinion addressed to me and to First American.

That was about ten cents on the dollar.

I told Dufficy to keep his cents. I would keep my freedom of speech and my right to sue.

In the face of my refusal to settle, the First American senior executive, James J. Dufficy warned me that if I did not agree to settle, they had a battery of in house attorneys and many more for hire off the street. Dufficy tried to intimidate me by stating that First American and their attorneys had the power to drown me and my attorneys under paper work. They would make the case last until they bankrupted me and or my attorneys abandoned the case!

I sued.

My attorneys deposed various First American executives who had colluded to issue the ‘liars title insurance’.

Under oath, various First American executives acknowledged that they went out of their way to insure the loan behind my back.

For example, the following is an excerpt from the transcript of the deposition of Ad Zetz, a First American senior exec:

At page 102 line 6 of his deposition, my attorney, Carl Hagens asked Zetz::

(You or Your company) “… wanted to do this loan without Mr. Leclezio’s consent; isn’t that right?”

Under oath at line 8, Zetz answered: “Obvious, yes.”

Carl Hagens sought confirmation by asking:

“That’s obvious to you?”

At line 10 of his deposition transcript, Zetz again answered: “Yes”!

Zetz was one of the key figures participating clandestinely in that fraudulent liars title insurance transaction.

During the same deposition, when Carl Hagens went on to ask Zetz why his company would insure such a high risk loan; Without even blinking an eyelid and under oath Zetz casually replied:

“We had the chance to make a couple of thousand bucks – Why not”?

Another First American senior exec wrote in a memo: “It is worth taking this high risk in view of future business”!
Obviously, nothing has changed at the First American Corporation over the last 14 years.
In 2010, according to the Bank of America lawsuit, the First American Corporation denied or ignored most of Bank of America’s claims in 2008 and 2009. Thereafter, once again, in a typical attempt to drown Bank of America under paper work, last August, First American started sending more than 2,000 letters to the bank seeking information and documents related to the claims.
In my case, financially I was obviously no match for the First American Corporation and their battery of in house and outside lawyers for hire. When I was spent out, I hired an attorney on contingency. After two more years of litigation in a ‘no lose case’ according to the high profile attorney firm, I believe my attorney won big and I lost bigger.

Lawyers and executives for Bank of America, in your case, the stakes are high enough. Do not let the First American Corporation drown you under paper work. Do not negotiate a cheap settlement as Carrie Gaska of First American suggest you might do. Too often the First American Corporation has won by default or more fraudulent settlements. The result is unabated crime leading to losses in the millions for the many continues to be perpetrated by the First American Corporation. Wipe them out.

As Forbes pointed out in their November 13, 2006 issue the First American Corporation plays a key role in America’s richest real estate racket – An $18 billion a year hoax on the American public. Their product is outdated and unneeded. Even the more so when one considers the minimal percentage of claims under which First American has historically paid out. The Motto of First American: Insure anything – Litigate everything has paid off handsomely to the First American Corporation up to now!

I hope Bank of America sues right up to the winning post.

I pray and hope that NYAG, Andy Cuomo also wins his suit against First American.

I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Cuomo’s statement:

“First American helped set the current mortgage crisis in motion.”

The First American Corporation should pay the piper for all the international chaos they contributed to set in motion.

The Bank of America sues the First American Corporation

Bank of America Corp. stepped up efforts to curtail the cost of soured mortgages by suing First American Corp., claiming the title insurer refused to cover more than 5,500 loans that caused $535 million of losses.

The policies described in the First American case sound like “liar’s title insurance.”

The First American Corporation has a history of getting involved in “liar’s title insurance” going as far back as 1996! I know it first hand. Yet, for the First American Corporation, it is still business as usual.

My blog or my posts under ‘leclezio’ or louis_wendy_leclezio on the Yahoo FAF message board dating back to 2000, offers a well documented track record of the First American Corporation's historical “liars title insurance” systemic 'modus operandi'. To make matters worse, when the lie is so blatant, First American issues the title policy subject to an ‘invalid’ indemnity agreement. Of course the existence of the indemnity agreement is not disclosed to affected parties. First American has never dared to collect on some of its dubious indemnity agreement preferring to sink its victims.

A most respected leading real estate attorney, Mr. Jerome Lasky of Moses and Singer, New York issued an opinion about this odious practice of the First American Corporation on June 2, 1998! Dear Children & Grand Children, Dear brother and sisters, Dear family and friends,

Sons and daughters of traditions…

For at least the last 70 years, on May 1st, the Labor Party of Mauritius has held its traditional massive Labor Day meeting.

Ever since our return to Mauritius uncle Fernand and I, when I was still in MRU, have attended. Over the last few years uncle Fernand got a special ticket from our Prime Minister to step on the Labor party podium on May 1st!

This year, national elections have been scheduled for May 5th. The Labor Day celebrations were planned to be the biggest ever! There were to be over 60 candidates on the May Day celebrations platform.

So Eve and I told uncle Fernand not to be disappointed if he did not get his podium ticket.

But you know uncle Fernand… He could not imagine not participating fully. Fortunately, our Prime Minister, Navin, showed yet one more time what a big heart he has. I have never found or known a person in such a high position show so much compassion, kindness, love and patience towards anyone. This is what sets Navin apart as the beloved and undisputed (except by a few losers) leader of each and every member of our rainbow community.

Regardless of the pressure and stress Navin must have been under, on the eve of one of his biggest days, Navin must have sensed what it meant for uncle Fernand to be by his side on that important day. So, uncle Fernand got his usual special pass to the platform. Navin is a Godly man!

I am for ever grateful and thankful to Navin and his team for making uncle Fernand’s May 1st so very special. To my mind, that is just one of the small examples that establish Navin as an extraordinary world leader among so many other ordinary ones!

To record this unforgettable event, Eve & I had told uncle Fernand to be sure to take a camera to memorialize that unique moment in the history of Mauritius – A Labor Day meeting only 4 days before elections on May 5th, our Mauritiano version of Mexico’s Cinquo de Mayo.

On May 5th and 6th Eve and I gave up work and stayed glued to the TV until the final results. Navin scored an outstanding victory.

In the mid ‘60s Mauritius was considered doomed by ‘brilliant’ British economists, professors Titmus and Meade. My father told me then, and was often heard saying, that the only man who could set the course for a new Mauritius was Dr. Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. Failing that, Mauritius was deemed to be facing a bottomless abyss!

History proved my father to be absolutely right. The vision and determined perseverance of Dr. Ramgoolam were foreign to the foreigners and Mauritians who in the ‘60s firmly believed that Mauritius was destined to be engulfed in a spiraling vortex of chaos! Many abandoned ship then! But with wisdom and perseverance Dr. Seewoosagur Ramgoolam stayed at the helm and with a fatherly hand, he led every Mauritian remaining in the land, away from a bleak future. Dr. Ramgoolam had successfully defied The Malthus theory – Mauritius would not die from within!

He fathered the Mauritian Nation. With single vision (literally & figuratively) The Honorable Dr. S. Ramgoolam turned history around and interred prophets of doom. He provided a springboard for long term sustained economic growth through initiating a policy of free education for all. Then together with Gaetan Duval, Dr. Ramgoolam launched and gave much impetus to the tourism industry, one of the solid and flourishing back bones of the Mauritian economy!

Today I am delighted to tell you my children and grand children, my brother and sisters, my family and friends around the world that Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam successfully passed the ‘baton’ to his son Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam.

In turn, I confidently assert to you all that the only person who can and will set the tone for a multi faceted durable Mauritius for decades to come is our returning Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam.

With full confidence in Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, in 2005, soon after Navin’s election as Prime Minister, I joined the multitude of other Mauritians who now choose to return to our land so full of promises! The grass is greenest right here… This is no accident. Two generations of the Ramgoolam family have strived and succeeded to make Mauritius durable, spiritually, culturally, socially, economically and environmentally.

Over the years, from one generation to the next, God has His ways of rewarding those transcending figures who seek His wisdom, place all their faith in Him and strive for the overall betterment of all of God’s creation.

It is no wonder then, that Sir Seewoosagur was granted the wisdom and perseverance to defy the foreign economist pundits in the sixties. Thus SSR successfully commandeered Mauritius. He enabled this small island with no natural resources to maintain its position as the key and the star of the Indian Ocean.

Most worthy of wearing his father’s shoes and walking beyond his father’s footsteps our returning Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam has also managed to successfully defy the recent world financial crisis. In so doing, in 2009, Navin has firmly established Mauritius as a shining beacon of light to world economists! Today financiers from all over the world confidently scramble to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in various sectors of the Mauritian economy!

An American ambassador recognized once that Mauritius is more complex and difficult to govern than America.

Another American, Mark Twain, wrote in 1897 in his book, ‘Following the equator’, “You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius”.

God has undoubtedly handpicked His architects to continue His work in heavenly Mauritius. Two generations of the Ramgoolam family, SSR and his son Navin have succeeded to maintain Mauritius as a heaven on earth for all Mauritians as well as hundreds of thousands of visitors and investors. Our new Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport is gearing up to welcome over four million travelers to our heavenly island in the sun.

Uncle Fernand... Proud & so happy to be there!

As I looked at those pictures I was lifted by the power of such durable traditions. I thanked God for the friendships that have united us for generations.

After an absence of some 40 years from Mauritius I recalled the warm words of Navin on World Book day on Saturday April 28, 2007. Navin had, as usual, kindly accepted to launch my book, First American Title To Injustice. In his speech Navin recalled our long and stable family ties: “I was happy to learn that the National Library has been behind the launching of several books, the next one being one by Mr. Louis Leclezio, whose family has a long standing friendship with mine.” Worldwide time and tide wait for no man. When I spent time gazing at the picture of uncle Fernand shaking hands with Arvind Boolell, our ex foreign affairs minister, I was stirred by a remark Arvind’s father, Sir Satcam Boolell had made concerning our father.

In an interview with l’Express published on Friday November 21, 2003, Sir Satcam Boolell was asked:Quels sont les chemins que vous avez croisés au cours de votre carrière et qui restent pour vous des références ? (During your carrier who stands out among those you have crossed paths with?)

Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, Sookdeo Bissoondoyal, Bickramsing Ramlallah et aussi Fernand Le Clézio qui était un avant-gardiste. Je le rencontrais souvent. Il avait une grande ouverture d’esprit. Et puis, il y a Guy Rozemont. Si je ne l’avais pas rencontré, je ne serais sans doute pas dans le Parti Travailliste.

Note that Grand Pa had died in 1990 ! Yet 13 years later Sir Satcam Boolell still remembered him!

And now decades later their sons Arvind and uncle Fernand are on the same podium shaking hands on May Day!

How could I forget! There are also daughters of traditions…

I must point out that among other names, Sir Satcam Bollell mentioned: “Bickramsing Ramlallah et aussi Fernand Le Clézio”.

Well, although Eve and I had asked uncle Fernand not to forget his camera, for uncle Fernand, all that was important was to be there! In spite of the painful calluses under his feet, he walked under the rain to take the bus to the celebrations. To be present was what was all important to him – Period!

After uncle Fernand had waited for a bus for a long time to get home, we asked him if he had pictures for us to see? Oh! No he said, I forgot my camera but that does not matter, I was there…!!!

We felt most sorry for uncle Fernand and all of us!

Surprise! Surprise! Sadhna Ramlallah, the daughter of Bickramsing Ramlallah was there. Sadhna was most thoughtful and kind to take photos of the meeting and of uncle Fernand. Sadhna surprised and delighted us when she e-mailed the pictures above to us!!!

In his book, entitled Social Problems, Henry Georges, the nineteenth century social philosopher, said:

“Social reform is not to be secured by noise and by shouting, by complaints and denunciation, by the formation of parties or the making of revolutions but by the awakening of thought and the progress of ideas. Until there be correct thought, there cannot be right action”.

Certain sons and daughters of traditions most certainly know how to awake correct thoughts and inspire right actions!

We thank God for them.

Dear Mr. President,

Today, I heard your poignant speech on our local TV channel about your mother spending the last six months of her life lying in a hospital bed dying of cancer. Your mother was forced to spend much precious time left, talking on the phone with her health insurance provider. Your mother was thus unable to concentrate on getting better or sharing valuable moments with the family.

Every day how many such moving stories go unheard in America? You, Mr. President are our voice!

Today, I am forced to live on the island of Rodrigues off the coast of the Republic of Mauritius. I have been torn away from the US, from my four children and sixteen grand children all living in the US. I would so love to be able to focus on them and share unique aspects of their American life. But, here I am suffering from poor health in ‘health driven exile’! My poor health and loneliness is exacerbated by the ill effects of no health care in a country supposedly as great and as rich as America.

Had I not listened to you speaking so convincingly with the powerful voice of your heart, talking about your mother, my story might have remained unheard. How many more other pathetic health stories are buried under the layers of a whole range of subdued emotions?

In February 2002, my wife died of ALS at home in America. Harborview Hospital and the University of Washington Medical Center had declared that there was nothing more they could do for my wife and sent her home to die! For a month and a half, I became her health care provider with the help of my children and Hospice. Thank God for Hospice!

I have been so scarred by my experiences of no affordable or free health care in America that ever since you became President, I have been routing for you. I have been cheering you on and praying for you to keep finding the constant necessary courage to fight a contaminated and contagious system that is getting progressively sicker to the core. Yet a system that has been so rotten for so long that no other than you has dared to take a scalpel to carve out this cancer and stop it from spreading into the very marrow of North American society.

Today, as I listened to you, I applauded you so loud that I hoped you could hear me all the way across the three oceans that separate us! (I am writing to you just in case you missed my applause!) I applauded loudest when I heard you say that neither you nor should any American tolerate a status quo that comtinuously benefits insurance companies to the detriment of the American public! Yyyyyyeeeeessssssss!

Today whenever my children and grand children ask me: “Dad, or Bopa, when do you feel that you will be able to come back to America to be by our side, to be where you lived for 27 years, to be where you educated us, to be able to watch your grand children/us grow, to be able to meet some of the grand children you have not even had the chance to know yet?” Unfortunately my ever more desperate and poignant sad stock answer has to be: “I will be back when President Obama gets health care approved!”

So although I am so, so very far away, rest assured that I am watching your fight blow by blow. Indeed I am probably a lot closer to you and your ultimate goal than many in America. I know first hand that your victory means so, so very much not just to you, not just to me but to all Americans. Therefore I also applaud all those courageous politicians who have gone on a limping limb to be relentlessly behind your fair and just vision of a truly great and rich America.

Today I am grateful that Mauritius, my native country, a country without any natural resources, has free health care and free primary, secondary and tertiary education for members of its population. If a country such as Mauritius can do it for the benefit of all rather than protect the privileged benefits of a few, why could America not do it too? Change – Yes you can – Yes you should – Yes you must change the American health care system so we can all return to a sane environment. By the way Mauritius is the only country that I know of that subsidizes religions. In effect the Mauritian Government pays for people of various color and creed to pray!!! Is it why it has been so blessed with such an enlightened and most able Prime Minister – Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam – The son of the father of our nation!

Today I am alive and living in Mauritius because I have had free health care and free medication in Mauritius. Ever since I had cancer surgery in March 2006 followed by heart problems I have received free health care and medication on a regular basis although I had been away living for 27 years in America just prior to my cancer surgery!!! At what real human cost can America claim that it cannot afford to care for the health of its population or its immigrants? Is this a cost that cannot be measured in Dollars? Your mother, you and I must have experienced that hard cost first hand to really know that there is unspeakable pain and suffering beyond the boundaries of a greedy insurance system solely focused on the ‘well being’ of a comparatively privileged few unhealthy tsars!

But my sad story does not end there. The rest of my story has to do with another aspect of abusive insurance companies in America.

Today I am alive but forced to live here far from those I love most because I am broke after living the nightmare side of the all American dream gone wrong. I was defrauded of millions of dollars by a title insurance company. To crown it all that particular title insurance company usurps your image by calling itself: ‘The First American Title Insurance Company’!

In August 2006 I published a book, ‘First American Title to Injustice’. My book is my and my family’s true life story. It highlights the corrupt and criminal aspect of ‘Title gods’ such as The First American Corporation.

On November 13, 2006, the capitalist world was most surprised to see that even Forbes unreservedly exposed the $18 billion fraud perpetrated upon the American public by title insurance companies! The title of the Forbes article was: "America's Richest Insurance Racket"

On November 1, 2007, Reuters reported “New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo on Thursday sued First American Corp (FAF.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and one of its units for allegedly colluding with Washington Mutual Inc (WM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) to inflate the appraisal values of homes, helping trigger the mortgage market meltdown.”
By using preferred appraisers, "First American helped set the current mortgage crisis in motion," Cuomo said in a statement.

But for that First American nothing has changed. It is business as usual!!!

There also, unfortunately, I know first hand why Forbes and Mr. Cuomo felt so incensed by the abusive practices that have marred the American real estate landscape. There also, much change is needed to stop the unnecessary fleecing of Americans for the benefit of a most undeserving few! Will you ever have the courage to purge America of the evil practices of title companies?

I pray that you do! Change! Yes, you can! Yes, you must! Yes you will. Many will then join in the loud sustained applause you should hear resounding in your ears for years to come from around the globe.

Too often intrigue, hatred and killings make the headlines in International news.

By contrast, the overwhelming power of good old fashioned friendship, love, humility and discreet diplomacy seldom gets the kind of much needed exposure that could plant the seed to make the whole world a better place.

In the last week killings, the issuance of false passports, alleged terrorists arrests and the accidental slaughter of a group of innocent people killedby arms gone wild made the news around the globe!

While the wild choose to kick and kill, the wise pick the path of diplomatic skill.

Last week our honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam scored a most newsworthy victory on the world scene through quiet diplomacy.

Yet, to date it has had no world media coverage! Is it because our Prime Minister’s arms are made for hugging and not for killing that his outstanding achievement got no global coverage?

Two Mauritian citizens working for the US giant Chevron Corporation were arrested and thrown into jail after uncovering alleged corruption in the affairs of the Chevron Corporation in the Congo.

Where and when the power of a US company the size of Chevron failed to obtain the release of its employees, our Prime Minister stepped into the foray to obtain the freedom of our citizens.

On the local news our Prime Minister humbly stated that where other means had all failed, he had achieved that international feat through friendship and love.

Our Prime Minister told our nation that the President of the Congo is a personal friend of his and was also a friend of his father, the late most Honourable Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. The long lasting bonds of friendship alone were at the root of the ‘miraculous’ release of those Chevron employees who were luckily citizens of Mauritius under the leadership of Dr. Navin Ramgoolam!

Decades ago, our Prime Minister’s father, the founder of our nation, had told my father: “Fernand, we are a small nation. We have no resources other than our spirit. We have no military arms other than the arms God gave us. We are bound to use our arms to hug the whole world community regardless of creed, color or race.”

Decades later, our Prime Minister is most wise to be still walking in his father’s footsteps. Should the world media not report such a transcending accomplishment? It might just be like a breath of much needed fresh air on world air waves.

It would highlight the supremacy of love over hate, the superiority of friendship over the power of the military. Are friends not a lot easier to deal with than foes?

In November 2008, shortly after the election of President Obama, under the heading: America – Dream beyond all frontiers… I wrote in this blog:

“Does Obama have much to learn from our Prime Minister? Having crossed so many horizons and observed so many different Government leaders from so many different worlds, I unreservedly say: “YES!” Mauritius is a small country. It hosts a great nation under the exemplary leadership of our Prime Minister! Mauritius under Navin is worthy of world stage recognition."

In deeds “…how big a player does our Prime Minister deserve to be on the world scene? God knows best. And I trust that God will thrust Navin on the International stage to help the US urgently establish better relations with the world community.”

Is God using Navin once again to set an example to the rest of the world? Should the world community not be better informed about the power of love as illustrated in this critical instance? Come on Associated Press! Come on CNN! Come on BBC! Come Reuters! Where are you all?

Come on Chevron! This meaningful victory may not be worthy of a Nobel prize. But is it not worthy of a novel prize?

At the very least, the successful involvement of our Prime Minister should well deserve a token prize taken from vast reserves.

Our Prime Minister offered the very best of his winning diplomatic spirit, skill and friendship to resolve an International impasse. Our Honorable Prime Minister will ask for nothing in return. But to recognize the immense value of Dr. Ramgoolam’s intervention should the Chevron Corporation set an example? Should Chevron offer a novel prize in the form of some tankers of oil and gas to reward the leader of a country whose only natural resource is its boundless spirit of love, goodwill and diplomacy?

Chevron could seize this opportunity to lead the way in starting a new trend. A trend that would recognize that human arms are mightier than military arms. A trend that would reward the supremacy of diplomatic skill over those who choose to kill! A trend that would highlight and encourage the resolution of international conflicts by peaceful means!

Rodrigues Christmas...

My ears are ringing… All of your laughter is echoing… Let us receive a King! Let our hearts prepare Him room… He will not find much else in Port Mathurin… Let us listen to heaven and nature sing… To create that feeling… Otherwise we would not know that Christmas fills the silent muggy tropical air…

Street hawkers’ bells are ringing… Forget the snow flakes… Only sweat drops are falling… No shortage of drunks are singing… Forget the street lights… Above that drab, dreary and dreamless street… The stars will still shine bright through the silent holy night…

Santa will not appear… There are no chimneys to go down through… He will not bring a treat to this poor corner of the world… What a dirty trick…

But since there is no egg nog or reindeer, Grandma will not get run over… And for sure, we can say there is no Santa here… How could we ever believe in what we do not even know… But, you can be proud of us… We are taking it all very well… We have no gifts to take back… Even the man who drives the sleigh has no bells… Only a license to drive…

However, dreaming about the goose on the table gives us goose bumps… With our eyes closed and taste buds wide open, we can taste the pudding made of beer through the flaming brandy.

Everyday when I observe the son of the father of our nation speak to his children straight from and with all his heart, my heart goes out to him for all he is to the great nation he represents.

Indeed, in my heart, mind and soul, you have been such an exceptional father, capable of uniting such diverse children through such an outflow of love and genuine affection that, today, we view your father as the grand father of the nation and you as the most caring father of us all!

Thank you Grand father! Thank you father!

Shortly after Americans elected Barack Obama as President in November 2008, I wrote on my blog:

“…how big a player does our Prime Minister deserve to be on the world scene? God knows best. And I trust that God will thrust Navin on the International stage to help the US urgently establish better relations with the world community.”

Some time ago, you reminded us, Navin that an American ambassador had once told your dad that Mauritius was more difficult to govern than the US.

Having lived both in the US and Mauritius, I believe that American ambassador was correct.
Therefore I know that the success and example you have set as the present day father of our great nation places you as the most outstanding world leader of our times!

It is with that respectful appreciation in mind that my prayers accompany you and I wish you a most successful meeting with President Obama on September 22, 2009.

First American Corporation (NYSE:FAF) - Massive Systemic Fraud

Someone just opined on the Yahoo/First American Corporation message board that Kennedy has to repay $50 million immediately, that Kennedy should be in jail and that his house should be auctioned off.

Since 1999, I have been saying publicly that Kennedy and his henchmen should be in jail.

Massive systemic fraud has been ‘the’ way of life for Kennedy and First American going back to the mid 90s!

Starting in the mid 90s, Kennedy and First American were after the lion’s share of the market. The word from the top down was: “Get a piece of any business by hook or by crook”.

Kennedy had launched the new company policy: ‘Insure anything – litigate everything’.

This new culture was very much deplored by company veterans and senior execs such as Bill Heslington and Tom Brusca. Prior to being retired and dismissed somewhere in South Carolina so he could not testify in my case, Bill Heslington told me: “We could lose our license for doing what the company did to you with the approval of John P. Dahl in Seattle!”

Veteran, Tom Brusca was equally aghast that the company could and would engage in such an outright fraudulent transaction behind my back at the behest of a crooked ex partner of mine! Indeed, the transaction First American engaged in had been shunned outright by all other insurers.

At the time Tom Brusca remarked that under the old guard, such an outrageous dark shady deal would have been remedied and set straight forthwith without any arguments. But that the new blood within the company ranks was out to get business at any cost and had adopted the policy to litigate everything. Tom pointed out that the company had banked on the fact that it would take on average between three to four years to settle any claim. Few claimants could finance the prohibitive legal costs that would extend for that long in Court. On a legal cost versus return ratio, most claims would peter out and First American would win by default. Indeed at the time Tom pointed out that on average only three percent of premiums collected by First American were paid out to settle claims. Tom then laughed saying: “We could even avoid paying that if we chose to. But we do pay that much to warrant our existence!!!

In the mid 90s the whole Title industry was well aware of the new directive adopted and passed down the chain of command by First American. Veterans at Chicago Title were in utter disbelief to note what kind of fraudulent deals First American would insure in exchange sometimes for confidential and undisclosed ‘Indemnification Agreements’ from the insured. To make matters worse, on occasions such Indemnification Agreements became such hot potatoes that when the deals went bad, First American did not even dare to enforce the Indemnification Agreement and collect thereon. First American sought then to limit its exposure by letting the insured crooks run loose for fear the crooks might squeal and First American would be further exposed!!! This was to the detriment of both First American shareholders and the victims of such misplaced company greed.

In the mid 90s, concurrently with the adoption of such an abhorrent modus operandi, the new blood at First American embarked on a buying spree. In order to do so First American had recourse to a number of strategies designed to inflate the price of its stock.

Thus seeking outside expertise and assistance to manipulate its stock price, First American appealed to a well known stock manipulator who had been banned from the Alberta Stock Exchange. One would think that it could not get very much worse than that. But it did!

At its shareholders’ meeting in Santa Ana on April 22, 1999, The First American, KKK clan of senior execs (Kennedy, Kermot and Klemens) conceded that they had engaged in ‘Creative Accounting; That the Feds got them to restate their figures; And Kennedy admitted that adjustments made to the creative accounting figures had a temporary negative impact on the company stock price. But that they would get the price up again so they could buy companies cheap again!!! (I have a variety of the ‘creative’ statements of the KKK clan on tape to this day!)

No sooner said, then done.

At the same shareholders meeting on April 22, 1999, Kennedy ‘guaranteed’ (Kennedy’s word) to stockbrokers and shareholders present at the meeting that the company would increase its dividend by the end of 1999! That statement had the immediate effect of driving the stock up. But 1999 went by and the dividend was not increased as ‘guaranteed’ by Kennedy! At the time, numerous entries on the Yahoo/FAF/Message Board by me were refuted by the same shills haunting the board with disinformation today. Those same shills wrote that I was a liar and that Kennedy could not have ever made such a statement; That Kennedy by himself could not ‘guarantee’ a dividend increase; That it took Directors’ Board approval to do so!

Finally, to call up all of the lies from execs as well as shills, I published the Kennedy, Kermot and Klemens misleading statements on the web through Geo Cities. This was obviously so embarrassing to the company and the KKK clan that somehow my message was made to disappear. All relevant statements caught on tape are still all in my possession today!

Now let us review what if anything has changed in the First American rapacious greed mentality ‘Get the business by hook or by crook’:

In June 1998, one of the most eminent lawyers in the Title Industry, Mr. Jerome Lasky of Moses & Singer, New York, reviewed the evidence produced by First American in my case, albeit that it was discovered in depositions that John P. Dahl had tempered with exhibits. Mr. Lasky concluded and wrote:

“Indeed, we have been provided by you with an internal document of the title company, obtained by you through discovery, which shows that the title company, although fully aware of the risk they were assuming, decided to issue the policy to the lender in order to get this piece of business, and specifically with a view to obtaining future business from your partners. The policy was thus issued for the business reasons of First American, despite their knowledge that by issuing the policy they were enabling your partners to breach their contractual agreement with you.”

Mr. Lasky’s opinion affirmed the belief within the whole title industry then that First American was indeed out to get the lion’s share of the market by hook or by crook!

That was in 1998. Does the same mindset endure through to 2009?

On November 1, 2007, Paritosh Bansal and Martha Graybow of Reuters report:
Washington Mutual pressured the First American unit to inflate appraisals as a condition for doing future business together, the AG's office said, adding that the alleged scheme was detailed in numerous e-mails.
Cuomo also released e-mails he claims showed executives were aware they violated federal regulations. .

Cuomo said eAppraiseIT and the parent company knew its actions were illegal, citing an April 17, 2007 e-mail from eAppraiseIT's president to First American that said: "We view this as a violation of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Office of Thrift Supervision, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice influencing regulation."

What’s new to First American?

Other than that the thievery through repeated and customary breach of fiduciary duties goes on:

Eagan O'Malley & Avenatti, LLP filed a complaint in California state court against the First American Corporation (NYSE:FAF - News) and its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Parker S. Kennedy.

The Plaintiffs allege that First American and Kennedy purposely engaged in unlawful acts in an effort to enrich themselves and misappropriate vital technology from their business partners, RE3W, Inc. and RE3W Worldwide. The Plaintiffs further allege that First American and Kennedy breached numerous fiduciary duties owed RE3W as a result of their business dealings which began in 2000.

First American has got away with it for so long – Why should they change their modus operandi now?

Consider what Washington State Deputy Insurance Commissioner, Jim Hopkins told me in the mid 90s:

“Mr Leclezio, from all the evidence I have reviewed in your case, it is clear that First American defrauded you of millions. The mere fact that John P. Dahl drove all the way from Seattle to Olympia in an attempt to justify his company’s actions shows they are horribly worried by their latest misdeed in the State where they have already been fined for a number of violations. But this is America! If someone steals $100 from a 7/11 store, it will make the newspaper front lines and the thief will be in jail. But if an insurance company like First American steals millions of dollars from you they will have a battery of lawyers to defend them and we do not have the resources to fight them!

Yes Kennedy and his henchmen should all be in jail (Consider how Kennedy hand picked McMahon from Lehman to further manipulate the First American stock price and how McMahon used his entrée into Lehman to dump First American stock on international investors at a conference Lehman hosted for First American in London). Kennedy and his henchmen should be made to repay all they have stolen from Americans and the international community through the years. In fact they should face triple punitive damages awards.

Is it a wonder that stalwart financial gurus faithful to the company for years have already bailed out?

However realistically, who has the resources to go after those white collar criminals and see to it that First American and its top execs are put in the shade for a long time? The world would be a fairer and better place and the American and world economy would have a chance to recover faster.

But once again I ask: Can greedy leopards change their spots whether in liberty or in cages?

The story behind this art is the story of the rock on the wood.

The rock would so transform the dead wood
That the wood could in turn transform
All who looked at the rock on the wood.

A piece of wood lay abandoned, lonely, worm eaten and forlorn on the forest floor.
Little did it know that it was about to be metamorphosed.
A river of lava from a sudden volcanic turmoil entombed the wood.
Its whole world suddenly turned dark.
It was all petrifying as it lay captivated by the rock.

Time ticked away.
Wind and rain chipped away.
Over millenniums little by little the wood was exposed.
Emerging from the tomb,
It had kept its identity yet it had been transfigured by the rock.

Petrified it had been.
Solidified by the rock, it now was.
Ground and polished by Providence, it could finally disclose its holy beauty.
Its red and grey color reminds all of the dripping blood and water that transfigured it.

Released from the dark tomb that held it captive, it revealed its transsubstantiation.

There it lay caressed by the rain, the wind and the sand being slowly polished.
It was waiting for its day when it would forever reflect the beauty of its creator.

The Foundation Rock

An age old millstone holed and shaped out of the rock by the hands of man.
It was used for years to grind grain to nourish the body if not the soul.
It was also waiting for the right day to testify to the grounding power of the Word.

The Foot

The forlorn forward hull of an old sailing boat laid still in a lull on the beach.
How could it possibly take anyone to a safe harbor in its present broken up state?
A wreck on the beach it was. Could it ever bear witness to the rudder that steered it?

A slab of petrified wood millions of years old.
Perhaps not a Cedar from Lebanon – But a Conifer nonetheless
How long had it stayed captivated by the rock that would transform it?
Could such a transfiguration take place in three days or did it take three million years?

This is a new day! This is the day the Lord has made. Rejoice and be glad.

Today the wood, the rock and the petrified wood have come together to symbolize the bonding power of love. Our creator so loved this holed out world that we must hold on with hope for the day faith will make us holy by the loving power of the trinity!

Gift of Life… & Love... That’s Cricket…

Dear Children, Grand children, family & friends,

Some of you children may remember how we used to love to go to Issaquah creek or Soos creek or the Chittendam Locks in Seattle to watch the ‘salmon run’ returning to spawn.

I was always fascinated by that supreme sacrifice …It often reminded me of the passage in John 15: 13… “A man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends”.

Lest we forget, lest we forget…; How a mere salmon or a tiny cricket can bring those words vividly back to mind!

I used to sit by Soos creek or yet again by the Cedar River to watch the returning salmons struggle to live and stay the course to release new life! Time would pass much too quickly as I gazed motionless in sheer wonder. In no way did I want to affect the concentration of the salmon or divert him from his focused end goal… to pass on precious life to the next generation.

Truth is that with much faith, for the salmon; up the river way also lay the way to new life…

In silence I loved to observe the supreme effort of those salmon persevering and battling up the creek. Sometimes the water level was so low at the end of a long dry summer that the top half of the salmons would stick out. In the crystal clear glacial waters, I could see the salmon’s belly being torn while scraping against the round or sharp river rocks. With a common purpose the salmon were all struggling in an uncommon way to live. Did they sense that they were on their way to die so as to leave behind new life? The salmons were certainly being torn from above and from below. Were they also torn from inside at the thought of the ultimate sacrifice they were about to go through? Were those ripples on the water surface vibrating with the echo of their cry: Lord! Oh Lord! Why have you abandoned us?

As with the crack of a whip tearing into the flesh, birds of prey were swirling above the salmon. With precision and regularity, the birds dove to mercilessly tear off pieces of flesh when they could not snatch the whole salmon in one swift passing scoop.

Yes! Indeed, with much admiration I often prayed to have the salmon’s courage some day…Regardless how it was being ‘crucified’, its skin and flesh torn from above and from below, the salmon kept striving forward towards the cross roads of its ultimate sacrifice of love. At that cross road, one of the street signs leading the salmon to its original place of birth spelt ‘Death’. But the other street sign read ‘Life’! There, at those cross roads the salmon would say ‘Adieu’ to his world travels spanning some four years across the ocean. Concurrently the salmon would proffer ‘Fare Well’ to the new generation springing along that traditional old spring, creek or river channel!

Year after year, along the flowing waters of various Northwest water ways new life would flow downstream towards the open ocean’s adventure until at the end of the voyage once again imminent death would battle upstream to bring about new life. The thought of that yearly cycle of new life issued from death going on for millenniums in a seemingly endlessly repetitive process used to captivate my imagination. Year after year watching the same looking salmon, I often questioned if life submitted to death or if death surrendered to life?

I concluded that since the salmon lives on, St Paul was correct in claiming: “Death where is your sting?”

Since my return to Mauritius and lately in Rodrigues, I have also been fascinated by coral life. Corals take hundreds of years to reach any meaningful size. Over decades they know that they can only find new life from and can only grow on the skeleton of their ancestors! Again in a vast sea of life I am amazed to find that there also, death supports new life!

That’s what I love to observe more and more at the animal level. Did God create that sacrificial instinct in animals in order to help us better comprehend the awesomeness of His only Son’s sacrifice? Is that one of God’s ways of helping us find truth and have life along the way?

What goes on ‘naturally’ at the instinctive animal level is exemplified through the strongest possible testimony of Love given to us by Jesus. The reading on the second Sunday of lent out of ‘Living Faith’ and the Bible spoke to that sacrifice. The ‘transfiguration’ precedes the turning point in the life of Jesus and therefore the life of the world through the life of the Word made flesh to die in order for us to have eternal life!

Living Faith: “Jesus’ total gift of His life for and to humanity will be, at the same time, the Father’s gift of His only son to us. John 3:16 – God so loved the world that He gave His only son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life.”

Jesus makes it plain for us to see and Jesus sets the scene for us to grasp the cycle of life from our observations in this world – We are transfigured by the transition from the one form of life to the next.

Death unveils the mystery of life. Death brings about the transfiguration that propels us from a worldly life to an eternal one.

In the same vein, even if unable to fathom the mystery, in a more ‘basic instinct driven will to live’, animals ensure the perpetuation of life through love and through ultimate sacrifice.

All created by the Word, the animal world instinctively chooses life over eternal death of the species!

Hence, because the Word created this world, the Word often uses small miracles/coincidences in this world to increase our awareness of the beautiful life that surrounds us and the supreme life that awaits us through the on going gift of new life.

Here, under the tropics, we are very far from the Northwest salmon runs. I am physically very far from you my children, grand children, old and young friends. But I am never far from those I love so much and from all that I have so loved to observe.

I continue to be fascinated by the thought of life conquering death through love. Even if and when it is at the price of great pain and suffering!

When I was young I had to learn by heart the famous fable from La Fontaine: ‘La Cigale et la Fourmie”.

« La cigale ayant chanté tout l’été se trouva fort dépourvue lorsque l’hiver fut venu… »

It is the story of the cricket and the ant. It illustrates how the care free cricket sang all summer while the laborious ant worked all summer to save for a Seattle rainy winter day. I always felt that the ant was put in a most favorable light while the cricket was pictured as a no good partier!

That old concept and the discovery of the beauty of new life emerging out of a cricket’s death have radically changed my opinion of the cricket.

It took only one day for me to learn to have much more love and respect for crickets. Whether that love and appreciation is born out of myth and local folklore matters little. The first time we drove up the hill on the way to Mont Lubin, the sudden squealing noise of the shrieking massive swarm of crickets was so deafening that, not knowing what it was; Eve and I imagined that it was a loose fan belt screeching. We stopped the car and turned off the engine but the wailing noise went on unabated. Eventually we learnt that crickets endemic to Rodrigues made that constant screeching noise.

Lately, to try and escape from the torrid coastal summer heat, we take afternoon drives up the hill to go walk in the woods under the towering pines and Eucalyptus trees leading us towards the nursery of Solitude. During our walks, deafened by the squeaking endemic crickets, we often searched up the trees through the umbrella like dense growth canopy to see if we could find at least one cricket. But not trained to find that kind of insect within its century’s old natural habitat, we did not know they could be found at eye level. Instead, we searched towards the sky, way too far up. It was a constant vain and fruitless effort. We could never find or pinpoint any of those multitude of insects lost in a confounding sea of noise coming seemingly from everywhere at once!

Luckily last Saturday, as we were returning from Solitude we saw our friend, Cola, who was heading towards his home in Solitude. I asked Cola if he had ever seen a cricket? He laughed! Then he asked how many did we want to not only see but to hold? Effectively he started pointing at dead ones still clinging tightly to the tree bark at eye level all around us! This endemic cricket has so adapted to its environment that it is absolutely camouflaged within its milieu. So much so that unless you know where and what to look for, you can totally miss them a foot away from your eye!

As Cola unclenched a few of those endemic crickets from their age old environment and handed them onto us, we were surprised to note that they were all split open along their ‘backbone’! I asked Cola if it were other insects that came to split them open to eat them up. Again Cola laughed and said: No! They try to overcome death by gripping on to life and by tightly digging their tiny claws in the tree bark. But eventually they realize that life can surpass death. The crickets let go and let God. So! As they surrender to the forces of new life, their whole body splits open and as they die, new life emerges from them! It is symbolic of a simultaneous resurrection!

That’s cricket! They are a fact of life here! The cricket’s ultimate sacrifice helps it pass instantly from one life to the next! Aside from the new life it conceived, harbored and released all it leaves behind as a reminder of its own passage through the woods under the leaves is the envelope it leaves behind. Along the back of that envelope we can discern the lasting smile that one death and a new life joined together to carve down the spine of the old envelope. Under the vast canopy of leaves, it is a compelling reminder that others now live because some died! One life and all its empty veins has gone by, but not in vain…

Cola even found a live cricket for us.

After much wrestling, he managed to unclench it from the tree. As Cola handed it to me, I asked him what do they eat? With much conviction and an obviously deeply anchored belief Cola swore high and dry that unlike Rodrigues goats who ravage all growth, the crickets do not eat and or destroy anything throughout their lifetime! I insisted: “But Cola, to live they have to eat!” No, No, No said Cola. Their food is their song! Singing is what feeds them! That is their one and only nourishment! I said: Come on Cola, how can that be? Cola explained that, that was their one and only purpose in this world. The endemic Rodrigues cricket is born solely to sing to God’s glory. Cola went on to explain that they are born happy.

According to Cola and the local folklore, from birth the cricket inherits such a store of enthusiasm for life that they need absolutely nothing else but song and laughter to live on! And believe me, no one and nothing will ever make Cola believe otherwise!!!

Indeed I realized that, that cricket folklore or myth could very well reflect the spirituality/mentality of many of the people we meet in Rodrigues! It seems that many instinctively believe in just being rather than having, in just living rather than worrying about what more life should they be craving for from a God given life! The Rodrigues natives embrace life with a contagious smile and place all their trust in God’s Providence to go on living happily.

Most Rodrigues natives reject the ways of the world and place no faith in its wildly spinning wheel. Faithfully relying on the wise will of the Word, Rodriguans remain unaffected by the world’s financial crisis or any other form of panic to live another day only to want more.

They are satisfied to learn from nature and to know that Life will go on surrendering to new life with God meeting their needs, as and when only God wills. Cola told me that the cricket is most happy because it understands that in this world it cannot cling to anything, not a scrap of food, not a note that it was born to sing, not even its life; Nothing belongs to ‘us’ in this world We must let it all go…

And laughing Cola said and we, humans, who are supposedly cleverer than animals, we try to cling to ‘our’ life as though we possess it just as our possessions possess us! We would be better off to learn from the happy and care free constantly singing cricket. Like Jesus died on the wood of the cross to give new life to the world, the cricket dies singing to God’s glory on the wood of a tree to give new life to its progeny. The tree of life that heard the cricket sing throughout its life may remain standing but of that cricket all that will be left behind is its happy notes and smiling empty envelope.

Yesterday I asked a local entomologist to verify Cola’s belief about the cricket living only on laughter and song. He told me that according to him that local deep rooted myth that the endemic cricket lives only on laughter and song is embedded in the fable of La Fontaine. I told him that to me it matters not where the belief originated from. But it matters immensely for me to know that even in today’s world there are people who can firmly believe that joy and peace, song and laughter can still feed some of us up to the time we are ready to let go, to split ourselves open and die for others to live a renewed life of happiness!

Jesus referred to the birds of the air and the flowers of the field. I am confident that when He returns, He will refer to the salmon of the Northwest, the endemic cricket of Rodrigues and the trusting local natives of this island that is so remote from the world that it has time to be close to the Word, to its creation, its songs and all the ever present glaring realities that feed it whether they are camouflaged to some yet plainly visible to others!

It seems to me that along that endless channel of perpetual happy new life ensuing from deaf, the prayer of St. Francis: Make me a channel of your peace… takes on its deepest and most real meaning. May we sing to God’s glory as we live every minute as if it were the last of our life.

First American Corporation & James J. Dufficy - Fraud - That's not cricket

The symbolic greed of the First American Corporation and its actions through its slave ‘Jump Jim jump…’ have transformed my American life long dream into a nightmare.

Instead of reaping well earned/deserved profits from years of hard work, investments and cautious planning, the fraudulent actions of The First American Corporation as enforced by Jim Dufficy have forced me to presently live in exile far from my children and 21 grand children!

Robbed of millions of dollars by the First American Corporation, having subsequently suffered from cancer surgery, chemo therapy and post ‘Xeloda’ heart problems, I am now forced to live where health care is free and a loaf of bread only costs .20 cents!

To make matters worse, when I think of the problems facing US Corporations like AIG, GM & Chrysler, when I think of the economic problems affecting millions all over the world, I shudder to think that the First American Corporation, one of the main culprits of the current financial crisis, is allowed to continue to do business as usual!

President Obama please check FAF out and rein that shameful other First American in… They should be put out of business.

The First American Corporation conspired with WaMu. Together they connived to overstate real estate values. New York Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, filed suit against the First American Corporation. Cuomo denounced their fraudulent practice towards New Yorkers and the whole sub prime industry. Indeed the Attorney General blamed First American for being at the root of the world financial crisis!

But! Why worry? Be happy! It will soon be business as usual! If we are to believe a post read on the First American Corporation/Yahoo message board!

The First American Corporation can count on the other First American to bail them and all the other American financial criminals out!

America - Dream beyond all frontiers...

Dear Children & Grand Children,

It is with much love and continued desire for what is best for you that I address these observations to you all. From the time you were born, your mother and I have spared no sacrifices to offer you the best we could. I recall some of Lou’s words at his wedding along those lines two years ago. I also call to mind Wendy’s recent mail sharing her own observations about changes and her desire to know me closely in my 60s! Glad to share… For what it may be worth to you today… tomorrow… and may be for eternity…

Yesterday, I read in ‘Living Faith’ about the spiritual strength that empowered Rev. Martin Luther King to be “faithful to Christ’s non violence in his own ordeals.” “Similarly, Paul was profoundly content in the comforts he had and all that he didn’t have. (We have found out much about ‘have nots’ & ‘want nots’ in Rodrigues) In Christ, Paul had come to understand both how to enjoy abundance and how to embrace neediness. Through life we must learn how to hold abundance and need together without denying either.”

We must keep an open mind and the conviction that God knows best! Therefore in all things we must be thankful to Him!

I do not mean to be preaching to you. I gather that some of you may be even too busy to read on. But for those of you who still care, as my legacy, I want to share my gratitude with you for ALL the experiences and awareness God has led me through - And with His help, further help you ALL to be ALL you can be.

I believe that to do so it is important that we broaden our horizons beyond ourselves and most certainly well beyond our individual country’s horizons. Thus I thank God for leading me across and over so many horizons over the last 43 years. From this vantage point, probably among one of the last, I can best witness and testify to God’s glory through what He has opened my eyes to see across and beyond the seas.

In years to come, I hope that when I/we look back on my time in Rodrigues, I/we will realize that it was not all in vain. That Mommy even from heaven and I from earth are being placed where we are in order to continue to learn how to go on offering you the very best we can with all the love we have for you ALL.

I was amazed to learn from Kitty and Terry last night about all the evil intentions that some Catholics in the US appear to pin onto the new President!

I was even more amazed to note how the same Catholic Church can apparently have such different views of Obama in different parts of the world.

At church I listened to the prayers of the faithful as read from the pulpit. The first prayer was: “We thank God for how the election turned out in America. We pray that now America will embrace a Christ like policy of PEACE in the world.”

Before mass ended, just before the final blessing, Holy Father Perrine asked that we bless each other on the forehead as a sign of peace towards each other and gratitude to God for the election of Obama.

It heralds a new era of much needed Peace and hopefully renewed hope and prosperity for the entire world.

After church I bought ‘La Vie Catholique’ (I used to read it as a kid. It has been in print for over 79 years).

After getting back home and reading ‘La Vie Catholique’, I concluded that the world is a lot bigger and a lot more important than America.

I prayed for you all to be able some day to see America from a world perspective instead of forming opinions solely from a narrow, restricted and tainted home view!

The cover page of ‘La Vie Catholique’, (web site address www.laviecatholique.com -The only paper we get for weeks) had a beaming picture of Obama. The editorial sowed fresh hope in the heart of those who despaired that they would ever see changes within such a loaded Americracy. The editorial spoke to the fact that All things are made possible through God and that the dynasties of the rich and powerful can all crumble by the will of God through the faith of man, both in God and in himself.

To illustrate that fact the editorial quoted a speech delivered by our Prime Minister last Sunday. The Honorable Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam told the story how a haughty (Red neck, white ‘Republican’ Mauritian) once wanted to lord it over Navin’s father. So that red neck told Navin’s father in Parliament: “My grand father was a lawyer, my father was a lawyer and I am a lawyer.” Navin’s father humbly replied: “My grand father was a ‘coolie’, my father was a ‘coolie’ and I am a doctor – Indeed we have come a long way!” In his speech, Navin could have added: “My grand father was a ‘coolie’ I am the Prime Minister of Mauritius. But Navin is too humble to engage in that kind of vain talk!

I will quote a few more lines from Navin’s speech as reported in the editorial of ‘La Vie Catholique’: “We came in this country on different boats. We are now on the same ship. What is more important is that we now all agree on the same destination.”

In my humble opinion, Navin’s comment as it relates to Mauritius could just as well apply to each and every world citizen embarked on one liner. We are all sailing along our universal journey towards eternity.

The back of ‘La Vie Catholique’ had a big picture of Martin Luther King on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial delivering his world famous speech: ‘I have a dream’. ‘La Vie Catholique translated it in French. The inspiring comment to the local population urged us all to be patient in our pursuit to be all we can be. M.L.K. delivered his speech on August 28, 1963. Back then it was a message of hope meant to inspire the world! It was a seed that bears its sweetest and most mature fruit today!

Likewise I am reaching out to you today from tiny Rodrigues. I urge you to look beyond the frontiers of America. M.L.K.’s message broke all frontiers of dreamland.

By repeatedly shaking people out of their nightmares for 25 years, the dream has finally become a reality celebrated the world over. Obama has been elected President of the USA! Change! Yes we can! I believe that none other than God’s closest friends, as disclosed in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, deserve to revel in that reality today! Praise be to God!

Twenty five years ago, M.L.K. ended his speech saying that he hoped that God’s glory would be revealed some day and that the world would be able to share that glory together! Today, I say that God knows definitely best how to make His glory shine in the ‘mostest’ hearts all over the world!

Americracy has finally shed mediocracy to embrace true democracy. The greater glory of GOD throughout the global village is acclaimed with loud Alleluias from all four corners of the globe!

At every glorious turn of Rodrigues life, the locals love to let off fire crackers. Some of you would have shared my tears of joyful emotion looking at the local jubilation at the news that Obama had won. People ran to every Chinese store to blow their meager savings to buy fire crackers to blow!

Can ‘La Vie Catholique’, can Catholic bishops, can all those humble priests and hard working people be wrong? Am I wrong to read what I do in all the red flaming exuberant joyful and hopeful hearts that surround me?

But above all, please answer me: Can God possibly be wrong to have allowed Obama to be elected for His greater glory to shine in a multitude of hearts the world over?

Throughout the day, thoughts and questions have been rushing through my mind about some aspects of the American mind set!

Is the life of an unborn in America (through solicited abortion at the hands of a fellow American), worth more than the life of an unborn who wanted to live, but dies in Iraq in the womb of his dying mother just because she was shot to death for no reason by a U.S army thug? God knows best!

When I see the poor and needy (pardon me for pointing out that none of you in your U.S. and European neighborhoods can even begin to imagine what that means) here give birth to all the children that God decides to bless them with, I ask myself: Why is abortion practiced so much in America and why is it such a hot electoral issue in such a rich country when it would be a non starter here where children are most welcomed to embrace their poverty, only trusting that God will provide? God knows best!

Is the life of a few thousand American soldiers killed in action through a war rooted in Republican American greed worth more than the lives of hundreds of thousands killed and maimed around the world in the name of American imperialism under the Republican Emperor George? God knows best!

Why are the hardships of a few unemployed in America (due to a failed American economic policy) worthy of more attention and harder to bear in the U.S. than the starvation brought about through many parts of the world due to that same Republican American greed and arrogance? God knows best!

Is it at all possible that on both sides of the aisle of the Universal Catholic Church, God allows so much passion to be released to better expose the various evils of the world?

What has this election served to lay bare?

On the U.S. side of the Catholic aisle, it has freshly churned emotions over the shocking atrocity of abortion, as practiced in a country choking with material abundance. Indeed it has fanned so much passion that it could have become a major electoral trump card for some Americans.

On the world side of the religious aisles, the world is rightly revolted by the murder resulting from the mayhem of wars commissioned by a hot U.S.A. Republican Government in countries eyed for their black gold wealth. Note that the world should be equally horror struck by the on going and casually accepted slaughter of thousands of blacks, residing in poor unattractive countries, through the willful omission of a yellow, cold U.S.A. Government betraying a double standard policy.

On the world side of the religious and humanitarian aisles, the passions aroused are justly perceived to be rooted into the decades old fertile soil of American greed and racism! Do both those evils deserve full exposure to command proper reparation? God knows best how to reveal, soothe and pat both sides of the Universal Catholic aisle and the world’s opinion. That’s why God is omniscient and we are not! We can and should only trust in Divine Providence!

God also knows best how to stir us into action at the International, the national and the individual level.

That is why today I sincerely thank Him for allowing me to experience first hand the devastating effects of the greed that characterizes American Republicans. While you my children and grand children may know or sense it in various degrees, only God knows my suffering in detail.

All you, my children and grand children, may witness, are the superficial details of what I went through at the hands of the First American Corporation and the greed of its Republican executives, Parker Kennedy and James J. Dufficy. Of course you also know that these thugs were not invited but were rather introduced into our life through the back door by two other monstrous Republicans named James Sharon Trull and Ruth Ann Trull! As if that was not enough, now, I still have to contend with and deal with the worst and most repugnant, the most forked tongue of all Republicans in the person Michael L. Darland! I find solace in the knowledge that: All Republicans share the mistaken conviction that they are God’s gift to a tiny world that revolves around their navel! God knows best why?

Without experiencing the evils of greed first hand at the hands of these voracious vultures and if I were living comfortably in retirement I may not have identified the way I happily do with my immediate neighbors today. For His greater glory, God has brought me here towards the end of an extensive life trip to live amongst His closest friends and to discover a more peaceful and just, simple and humble happy world.

Had I not suffered, I may have had no reason to search. I could have been tempted to ignore the plight of a world so negatively impacted by the atrocious policies of greed of a Republican U.S. Government over the last eight years! Unfortunately, that greed factor rooted in the ‘Me First’ philosophy has inspired so many U.S. Republican citizens that the whole world is sickened by it today.

Today I wholeheartedly share the dream of a world that lives in hope that Obama will change Camp David into the camp of all the Davids of the world. They are all worth a hearing if the world Goliaths are to be silenced and put down successfully.

Change! Yes we can! But can one man alone in America change an American mind set?

God alone can!

Is God empowering a United World (Obama got 92% of the world’s vote) to change the United States? The balance is in the power of God!

God hear our prayer!

Only then will the world be able to sing with one voice the song not of the American nation only but that of the United World Village: Glory, Glory Alleluia… Change is marching on!

I repeat that I believe that this can and will only come about if Obama wisely chooses to consult with the big and small alike.

Indeed who is big and who is small? Is it only defined by country size?

For example, our Honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam is from a minute country when compared size wise to America. But how big a player does our Prime Minister deserve to be on the world scene? God knows best. And I trust that God will thrust Navin on the International stage to help the US urgently establish better relations with the world community. Indeed Navin was first to propose a reform platform of change during his party’s electoral campaign!

We all know that bigger is not necessarily better and as our ‘baby’ says ‘less is more’!

Does Obama have much to learn from our Prime Minister? Having crossed so many horizons and observed so many different Government leaders from so many different worlds, I unreservedly say: “YES!” Mauritius is a small country. It hosts a great nation under the exemplary leadership of our Prime Minister! Mauritius under Navin is worthy of world stage recognition.

Does Obama have much to learn from old civilizations in Asia and Europe?

Having observed how China has moved across Africa and South america with the power of love, opening its arms to all in its path, and how all in China’s path love and welcome China with open arms, I unreservedly say: Yes!

By contrast over the last eight years America has tried to impose itself through the power of arms. By using the wrong arms, America has harmed not only the world but it has harmed itself in the eyes of the world. Soon the U.S. will no longer be a dominant power.

There is a positive side. Over the years, the domineering stance of America has caused countries in Europe to unite and today the Euro is stronger than the dollar. Countries in Asia and Africa are now uniting and I predict that fifteen years from now, America will be a mostly irrelevant economic player.

So, my dear 21 grand children, I beg you to study Indian, Chinese and African cultures and languages. It is vitally important that you are able to communicate with citizens of those powers in their own language while understanding their culture. That is where the future lies! Seek the counsel of John Lindblom, a far sighted Chinese scholar from Blessed Sacrament church in Seattle.

I hope that after I am long gone, you will remember this advice, thank me for it in your prayers and think God knew best. Thanks be to God!

A country is sovereign through its culture. Thinking about the sovereignty of Mauritius over the Chagos and the atrocities committed there at the instigation of the U.S., I pray that Obama invites our Honorable Prime Minister sooner than later.

Beneficial International relations between the rest of the world and the U.S. could be put on a fast track as a result of such a meeting! For one, Obama could cause the U.S. to fly in the face of the decision of the Law Lords of England (a decision negating the rulings of Britain’s highest Courts just to placate the Republican U.S. administration) and render justice to Mauritius and the Chagos Islanders long before the U.S. has to renew its lease over Diego Garcia!

Is the plight of the Chagos Islanders not equal to the nightmare of numerous Native American tribes who are being somewhat compensated somehow today in the USA? God knows best!

If the plight of a nation is equal to that of an individual, then all First Americans should be forced to render justice and deliver equity equally. No rogue should be protected in its ‘thiefdom’, be it called Diego Garcia or Santa Ana!

A weak burnt out Bush, brought to his knees through wrecking general havoc over the world, has surrendered to the power of those who humbly kneel down before the Burning Bush!

The scale of the wealth of the mighty could not tip the scales against the more worthy!

The White house will finally be the Black’s house opening its doors to all without discrimination.

Winning 92% of the International community’s vote, the election of President Obama by Americans was crucial for the welfare of the world village.

Christmas is drawing near. The theme ‘Peace to the world…’ will be soon sung by the ‘Voice of America’ choir. This time, it will strike a meaningful new note in renewed hearts the world over.

And for the first time in years the world should gladly echo back the refrain: God Bless America!

Change! Yes we can! Change if not the color of our skin, at least the color of our thoughts.

In Mauritius our Honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, the stateliest of international statesman, (as once again evidenced and further confirmed during his recent tour of Asia, Europe and North America) has urged us and shown us how to capitalize on our diversity by strengthening our bonds of unity.

On November 3, 2008 the post below will be a year old. On Nov. 5, 2007 after we first sounded the alarm on November 3, 2007, FAF stock was at: $31.53!

Today FAF had a low of: $16.71 – Wow!

What will FAF be at on Nov. 3, 2008?

After we posted on Nov. 3, 2007, savvy financial gurus took heed and dumped FAF.

Fool hardies went in headfirst way over their head.

Will those fund managers get lynched by their clients for jumping on board a sinking ship?

What perks did such fund managers receive for shedding all red flags to the wind and diving in those murky waters blindfolded?

Can a few director nominations justify drowning investors and setting their funds adrift?

Who is next to be sued re this long foreseen and predictable debacle?

Remember back then house prices were never supposed to fall – FAF and WAMU thought they could for ever pump this ‘blow proof’ balloon and fool the world!!!

Again we ask: Who has contributed heavily to the present world financial crisis? If none other than the First American Corporation and its subsidiary?

This is nothing new!!!

In 1996 First American engaged in fraud and defrauded our family of millions of dollars.

At the time, FAF’s senior exec, Ad Zetz was deposed. He was asked why had First American engaged in fraud and violated its company manuals. Under oath, Zetz callously answered: “We had a chance to make a couple of thousand bucks!”

Highly respected attorney. Jerry Lasky Esquire of Moses & Singer, New York, sifted through documents and found a memo stating that the company was prepared to take a “considerable risk for future business.” Indeed in spite of being actively involved in the title industry for over 33 years, Mr. Lasky had never come across any title company doing something so egregious!

Has anything changed at FAF over the last 11 years? Why does FAF senior execs systematically condone at best shady if not fraudulent transactions?

In her post on 11/02/07 janekane12 writes: “First American continues to prove that its leadership is ethically challenged.” Speaking from personal experience I confirm that ‘ethics’ is not a priority at FAF!

Janekane12 goes on to explain why ethics is of concern: “Most of the fines levied against title insurance companies are insufficient to deter improper behavior. Obviously, these types of arrangements are profitable. But this case, however, may be different. This one has the potential to be huge!

Now let us review the huge scope of the present case.

Could it generate a few class action suits in addition to civil and criminal proceedings by New York State, US residents and foreigners ?

Could investors who attended the Lehman Brothers conferences and invested heavily in FAF file suit? What did they hear from ex Lehman insider Frank McMahon that caused the FAF stock to reach an all time high shortly before it imploded? Did Frank and Parker Kennedy warn investors that FAF was about to turn in a loss for the quarter or was about to face major suits?

Could home buyers file a class action seeking refunds for all the extra payments they had to fork out as a result of their homes being overvalued?

On 11/02/07 janekane12 also wrote:

Remember we ‘were’ in a rising market. Remember FAF does not blink an eyelid before screwing a family out of millions of dollars “to make a couple of thousand bucks” and pursuing the lure of future business!!!

How much more did FAF earn for every $10,000 a house was knowingly overvalued by?

How much more did WaMu get to collect monthly for every $10,000 a house was knowingly overvalued by? Did it all not help WaMu inflate its paper?

Furthermore what was the perceived risk?

Dear Children, 21 Grand Children, family and friends,

Imagine living in a society where the priest, Father Alex Perrine, begins his sermon this morning saying: “For those of you who can read – The sign on the altar today says: Render unto God what is His and to Cesar…”

Imagine living in a society where I have seen our elderly neighbor stand at the bank with numerous others patiently and trustingly waiting for someone who knows how to write to come in. He and others can then blindly hand over their bank book and ask ‘a good Samaritan’ to fill their deposit/withdrawal slip!

How far we are from internet banking in such a society? But as I learn every day and specially so today – How close is such a society to God!!!

I have come to ask myself daily: “Is a society that promotes the “I am #1 dogma, a #1 society?”

What makes a #1 society?

Well, today some 47 children received their first communion at our little village church known as St. Pierre.

When you think how so financially poor those children and their parents are, you are certainly moved to tears when, a few hours after church, you hear a little voice outside calling: “Mr. Louis – Mr. Louis – Mrs. Eve –Mrs. Eve!”

And there is a little girl all dressed in her pure white satin dress, with an equally pure white satin basket with lace embroidery full to the brim with ‘Brioches’ and slices of home baked cake destined to all friends and neighbors!!!

And since they have no car they go smiling walking up and down the steep hills that Lou knows under the baking sun to share their bread and the joyful body of Christ they have just received!!!

Instead, that humble little innocent girl chose to state: Serving Christ and all those created in His image is my #1 commitment!

Indeed, with that spirit, that is the message that the little girl, Marie Nancy Eldy Augustin, proclaimed on the card she handed out with the bread she passed around the neighborhood today! She was not scared to knock at any door. She was not worried about having a door slammed in her face by some atheist. She was fearlessly, joyfully and peacefully sharing her joyful day

What true joy can material wealth bring us if and when we are spiritually bankrupt?

Which is worse? A World Financial Crisis? OR A World Spiritual Crisis?

How are we affected in this humble society by a world financial crisis?

Financial crisis has been such a part of our daily world for generations that in our society, we learn from the cradle to turn to the Spirit to meet our daily needs and suppress our daily wants. Thus we are inherently immune to any sort of financial crisis? We are not #1! We look up to #1 and we thank God, for teaching us to live independently from the world of finance.

I wish, I could put into words the sense of love and beauty that exuded from that simple little girl and the gift she shared with all her neighborhood today on her #1 day – It must have all been truly made in the humble image of God – It was so beautiful!!!

It is worth noting that Eldy’s grandfather is our neighbor who cannot read or write and stands waiting at the bank for someone to fill his deposit slip!!! Eldy is happy to live with her grandpa where money may be scarce but the love of Christ does not slip them by, ever!

I hope to get to share this wonderful world first hand with you some day because I love you all so much!!

I love it and so would you! Because the love of God is so very present all over this society, this world is very different from other societies we have experienced!

Here, we discovered that a society that is not constantly challenged to accumulate material possessions has time to cultivate much more important and fulfilling non material values. It takes time to count, nurture and share its blessings.

We believe that the heart of such a society best reflects God’s work of art.

Here we feel that a society is decidedly not #1 through what it has above others but rather through how it behaves towards others!

From here it is easier to render unto God all that is His and to the world whatever it may deserve.

Today, we did not deserve all the bread we got! But we are glad, through this public statement, to render unto this society the most honorable credit which is due to it.

Needless to say that the first call was followed by numerous others and today we wish you were all here to share so much bread.

Marty Whitman, Charles Brandes, Mason Hawkins, Seth Klarman, Third Avenue Management (Marty), Arnold Schneider and Steve Mandel to name but a few, all sold out of The First American Corporation since the beginning of 2008!

Not surprisingly even Marty Whitman, one of the initial largest holders of FAF stock and one of its most loyal supporters through thick and thin over the past 12 years has finally bailed out, big time!

Smart Marty Whitman is a wise man!

Marty invested in FAF when FAF was still a fledgling in 1996. IMHO, Marty taught the FAF senior execs how to add value to the company and how to manipulate the company’s stock and increase its market cap!

Indeed I suspect that around 1996, Marty worked his way into some 900,000 shares in exchange for his staunch support.

I further believe that Marty was present at the company’s April 22, 1999 meeting when Kennedy guaranteed a dividend increase before year end. That guarantee that never materialized and other false statements blurted out by senior execs at that meeting sent the stock sky rocketing momentarily. Soon after, the stock imploded when actual earnings and true business conditions were revealed.

But, in 1999, Marty faced the outcry of his investors demanding that he dump FAF. Marty faithfully held on!

Now, Marty must be smelling the burning rag or he must have feel the water level getting neck high in that burning or sinking ship for him to jump.

Marty must be comforted not to be the only deserter. Even The First American, blue eyed boy, James J. Dufficy, the one who claims that First American has “no duty vis-à-vis the public to do the correct thing” has defected and has run for cover!

Numerous class action lawsuits in various States across the US have been filed this month against The First American Corporation – NYSE: FAF.

One of the latest suits was filed by Grant & Eisenhofer, P.A., ) in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, on behalf of shareholders who purchased the common stock of the Company between April 26, 2006 and November 6, 2007, inclusive ("Class Period").

The Complaint alleges that, during the Class Period, First American and certain of the Company's officers and directors engaged in an illegal scheme. During the Class Period, in quarterly earnings reports, the Company's management reported increased earnings and reassured investors that internal controls were adequate.

The Complaint further claims that First American overstated its gross profit margins and net income during the Class Period and that throughout the Class Period the defendants made false and misleading statements regarding the Company's internal controls and financial performance.

The defendants are First American, Parker S. Kennedy, the Company's Chief Executive Office and Chairman of the Board, and Fred F. McMahon, the Company's Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer. That case is captioned Berks County Employees' Retirement Fund v. First American Corporation.

This is nothing new! It is only one more example of a well established, long enduring systemic approach by senior executives of First American to deliberately deceive investors. How often has First American resorted to creative accounting to overstate figures, inflate stock value and defraud investors in the past? How often has Parker S. Kennedy pumped up the stock through outrageous false and misleading statements in the past?

As an example, a quick review of history reveals that at a shareholders’ meeting held in Santa Ana, California on April 22, 1999, Parker S. Kennedy conceded that the recently, Fed ordered, accounting change had affected the stock price negatively. (Note: After investigation, the Fed had concluded that First American had used creative accounting to overstate its earnings and thus inflate its stock price. As a result of its findings, The Fed forced First American to restate its earnings.)

Unfortunately, no class action suit was filed then!

In the absence of meaningful fines or suits, Parker S. Kennedy was emboldened to blurt out a most deceitful statement at that same meeting on April 22, 1999. Without any authorization from the board, Parker S. Kennedy guaranteed to investors that the corporation would increase its dividend before 1999 year end. Foreseeing an improved return on capital, investors sent the stock momentarily skyrocketing days after Kennedy made that unauthorized and most misleading statement! Sadly the ‘GUARANTEED’ dividend increase for year 1999 never materialized and the stock plummeted!

Unfortunately, once again, no class action was filed!

IMHO, the series of class actions being filed lately against First American and its senior execs are long overdue!

James J. Dufficy leaves the First American Corporation, a NYSE trading company with a current market cap of $3.3 billion to join Stewart Title Guaranty Company. STG is a fully owned subsidiary of Stewart Title Company. STC’s market cap is presently less that $500 million!

IMHO, while The First American Corporation has grounds to rejoice, Stewart Title should have major cause for concern.

Mr. James J. Dufficy’s business philosophy is that ‘his’ company has no duty vis-à-vis the public to do the ‘correct’ thing.

Note that Mr. James J. Dufficy made that statement on a First American letterhead he addressed to me on March 24th 1998.

The Stewart Title board of directors and Stewart Title clients better be wary of this ‘new blood’ and his dubious policies pervading its ranks! Time will tell!

Should Xinhuanet further investigate and expose First American? How long does it take for The First American Corporation to settle substantial claims on average? How much could an insured be forced to spend over the years in pursuit of justice? How often does First American win by default by driving legal costs out of the reach of the average claimant? Does that explain why The First American Corporation has only paid as little as 3% of its billion dollar revenues in claims?

Of further interest it is to be noted that AP Singapore reports that in a recent e-mail, Southeast Asia's largest bank instructed traders in an e-mail not to do business with Lehman Brothers. In a subsequent e-mail DBS Group Holdings Ltd. advised traders to review new transactions (with Lehman Brothers) case by case.

On a case by case basis, should officials from South East Asia’s largest bank be made aware that Frank McMahon was a past senior exec of Lehman before joining The First American Corporation and that Frank may well some day attempt to dump FAF (NYSE trading symbol for The First American Corporation) stock onto the Asian markets just as he did on European markets through Lehman London offices shortly before the stock imploded!

Obviously this case, with international implications, has potential crippling financial consequences for FAF.

If Cuomo and his helpers who are pursuing this case aggressively prove to be right,
The First American Corporation could well face claims running into hundreds of millions of dollars from defrauded parties.

Because Cuomo's office lacks the resources to mount intensive investigations of subprime legal violations, much of the heavy lifting in multiple ongoing probes is now being done by the Securities and Exchange Commission, The U.S. attorney's offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn and the FBI. Cuomo and other state attorneys general--in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and Ohio--are playing an unofficial watchdog role, informally overseeing the activities of federal officials.

If Cuomo prevails in time, First American may well be stopped from splitting and find itself driven into bankruptcy instead.

Note that in my personal case, The First American Corporation did not hesitate to engage into fraud and to accept an overly inflated appraisal from my crooked partner. Like in the WAMU case The First American Corporation did so, solely in the hope of future business! Two law firms with most impressive track records, Milberg Weiss and Keller Rorhback are investigating the First American Corporation for alleged fraud under ERISA laws. First American fiduciaries are believed to have intentionally mismanaged the First American employees’ retirement fund.

So what does the First American Corporation decide to do?

Spin off its 100 year old flagship! It decides to cast off its title operations, the very goose that laid its golden eggs for so long!

Retire its New York State president!

Interesting timing indeed to say the least!

A future close examination of past statements by Kennedy will reveal to what extent Kennedy places the emphasis on possible stock price manipulation as opposed to steering the company with integrity and letting the stock find its own level!

Should an injunction be sought against the First American Corporation restraining it from splitting the company until the courts have ruled over the cases filed against it?

Note that some of those cases have potential international implications.

The SEC is investigating WAMU in connection with alleged inflated appraisals coerced from a First American Corporation subsidiary.

What’s new? Is involvement in fraud a systemic a long lasting way of life at the First American Corporation?

The SEC better be advised that the First American Corporation, WAMU’s partner in alleged crime, has never hesitated to conceal material facts from investors in the past.

We hold tangible proof on hand that, in order to entice investors to participate in a fraudulent loan, the First American Corporation failed to disclose hard facts of record discovered by First American examiners long before the loan was made.

First American Corporation went even further. In that instance, First American did not reveal to investors that in order to entice the lenders to participate in a fraudulent mortgage scheme, First American had secretly obtained a worthless indemnity agreement from the borrower.

As in the alleged case with WAMU, at the time, the First American Corporation was eager to accept a grossly inflated appraisal. The First American Corporation obviously did so then, just as it is reported to have done now. It stays motivated by uncontrolled greed and the lure of future business at any cost.Note that in my case, I have paid leading attorneys to discover the above and reach those damning conclusions. Could your firm develop a line of questioning that would demonstrate that senior execs at FAF have a long history of misleading the public and they have never hesitated over the years to abuse the confidence of FAF investors and employees alike?

In depositions, could you quote verbatim (with back up audio if need be) the misleading and utterly false statements blurted out by most senior FAF execs? The parallels and repeat behavioral pattern between 1999/2000 and 2007 are indeed most revealing.

Could such a line of questioning not set the scene and help establish FAF’s entrenched ‘modus operandi’?

Even in the face of gloomy company news, they have never blinked at lying in an effort to turn the red ink not even pink but to actually make it look black if not green through their wishful glasses?

IMHO the Judges should be left with no doubt that if FAF could take their loyal shareholders and employees for a ride over the years; they could likewise abuse the confidence of those trusting and faithful employees who put their blind trust and fate in the sticky hands of FAF senior execs/fiduciaries.

There is a saying in French: “Qui vole un oeuf vole aussi un boeuf!”

If in 1999, FAF execs could blatantly urge people to invest in the face of undisclosed disastrous news, why would they hesitate in 2007 to compromise their employees’ retirement fund?

Incidentally Note the critical dates between 1999 and 2007: April 21, 1999 stock closes at $16. April 22, 1999, Kennedy blurts his dividend increase remark. April 23, 1999, FAF stock closes at $20.69!

A mere six months later FAF closes at $11.50 on October 21, 1999.

Thereafter FAF declares losses and FAF stock tumbles to a low of $10.69 on March 13, 2000. A 50% loss in value over six months!

In 1999 did FAF execs and or fiduciaries also tap into their employees’ retirement fund just like they are doing now in 2007? Is it all a repeat systemic performance?

In 2007, do we have a rewind of the same strategy?

In May 2007 FAF presents at Lehman Brothers Investors Conference in London UK.
On June 1, 2007 FAF stock reaches an all time high of $55.11

Thereafter FAF announces losses, Lehman downgrades FAF and a mere six months after the May conference, on November 7, 2007 FAF closes at a low of $30.07! A little less than a 50% loss within six months so far!

Is it a virtual mirror image of the 1999 FAF performance or not?
In 1999, a trustworthy Chicago Title employee assured me that certain FAF employees were being paid to hawk FAF stock among fellow employees and real estate agents and clients. He further assured me that FAF had embraced the policy to: ‘Insure anything, litigate everything’ in their quest for industry supremacy. It is all catching up to them at long last.

I note with interest that your firm is investigating possible illegal conduct relating to The First American Corporation 401(k) Savings Plan. Specifically, whether certain fiduciaries of the plan may have violated the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 ("ERISA") in at least two ways: (1) by allowing employee participants to invest in First American common stock when it was not prudent to do so, and (2) by failing to disclose First American’s problems.

Would your firm further consider investigating what did Parker Kennedy and Frank McMahon of the First American Corporation disclose or failed to disclose to investors when they held a conference at Lehman’s Brothers' Tenth Annual London Financial Services Conference on May 17, 2007, at 11:40 a.m. EDT.
I hereto attach a post on the Yahoo/Finance/FAF/Message board. It is rather revealing!

At the time some other posts forewarned that Lehman in conjunction with FAF was setting up a scenario to make millions of dollars by shorting the stock. Shortly after the stock reached an all time high following the FAF presentation at Lehman, Lehman downgraded the stock and FAF announced losses for the quarter! Of course the stock imploded on unprecedented volumes. It would be interesting to find out who cashed in the most on ‘short’ positions then?

Note that although they have consistently gotten away with it up to now, senior executives at FAF are not novices at manipulating the FAF stock.

On April 22, 1999 at a stock holders’ meeting Parker Kennedy guaranteed that FAF would increase its dividend some time before year end. That remark sent the stock up some $4 the next day when trading volumes increased significantly.

By the end of 1999, FAF had not increased its dividend and had been forced to review the creative accounting practices that had caused its stock to trade at inflated values. That ‘dividend increase guarantee’ remark by Kennedy and other false statements by FAF senior executives at the time were all recorded on tape and are still available to date. At the time, the audio had also been published on the web but FAF saw to it that it got removed just like some of the messages forewarning the ‘short’ strategy allegedly set up by FAF/Lehman were recently removed from the Yahoo message board!

As a FAF stockholder I would be glad to be a signatory to any class action you may decide to bring against those rogues! They deserve to be put out of business for ever!

Fraud & Plunder! An enduring way of doing business at First American for far too long!

I suppose First American views law suits, fines and penalties as part of the cost of doing business!

How about the lives that have been marred by First American along the way? How do those people view First American?

In February 1996 First American engaged in a fraudulent deal. To quote the First American lawyer: “The considerable risk First American took for reasons of its own…” ended up costing me and my family millions of dollars.

When I sued First American, Bill Heslington, the First American national accounts manager at the time told me: “Mr. Leclezio if you were to prevail in your suit, we could lose our license. We could never let that happen.”

At the time Jim Hopkins, of the Washington State Insurance department told me: “Mr. Leclezio, John P. Dahl (FAF WA. Manager) made a special trip from Seattle to Olympia to come and try and explain away your case against them. He knew that you had given me Mr. Lasky’s letter from Moses Singer New York. Dahl had ‘guilt’ written all across his forehead.”

I said to Mr. Hopkins: “Why don’t you sue First American and yank away their license?” Sadly Mr. Hopkins replied: “That is the problem with white collar crime. These people can steal millions from you and simply get away with it because they will have a battery of lawyers to defend them. We do not have the necessary funds to assign to going after them!”

I pray and hope that at long last Mr. Andrew Cuomo will have the staying power, the will it takes and the necessary funds to put First American out of business once and for all the good of the nation. Indeed the whole international financial world will be a much healthier place.

But just in case Mr. Cuomo does not have the muscle by himself to put First American out of business, I am actively and earnestly seeking a large enough reliable law firm to launch a major class action suit against First American. I pray and hope that justice will finally prevail.

Had First American lost its license back in 1996 how many American home owners and investors would have been a lot better off today?

I for one would not have been forced to live in poverty away from my dearly loved family and friends just because First American decided to engage in a fraudulent case they could not afford to lose and paying fines, penalties and law suits are just part of the cost of doing business at First American!

It has predictably gone from bad to worse.

On June 2, 1998 Mr. Jerome Lasky of Moses & Singer, New York wrote:

“On analysis, we regard the recordation of the Deed of Trust by First American as particularly egregious conduct and, indeed a breach of its responsibilities as a licensed title company.

“Indeed we view First American’s conduct as so outrageous as to justify seeking the imposition of punitive damages as against it in any action based on its conduct.”

“In fact despite having been actively involved in title claims litigation for some thirty-five years, and having represented numerous title companies in claims litigation, the undersigned has never been presented with a comparable situation.”

“While we are addressing our letter of opinion to you personally, please be advised that we have no objection to your furnishing a copy of this letter to other counsel who are representing you in this matter or to First American, nor do we have any objection to your furnishing a copy of this letter to appropriate State Insurance Departments.

On November 1, 2007, nine years later Reuters reports that in yet another case alleging fraud by First American Corporation, New York’s Attorney General, Mr. Andrew Cuomo said: “Through this, First American helped set the current mortgage crisis in motion.”

"The independence of the appraiser is essential to maintaining the integrity of the mortgage industry," Cuomo said. "First American and eAppraiseIT violated that independence when Washington Mutual strong-armed them into a system designed to rip off homeowners and investors alike."

Should Mr. Cuomo seek help from Mr. Lasky or the offices of Moses & Singer? IMHO, a drastic meaningful action against those FAF rogues is long overdue!

This is nothing new!!!

In 1996 First American engaged in fraud and defrauded our family of millions of dollars.

At the time, FAF’s senior exec, Ad Zetz was deposed. He was asked why had First American engaged in fraud and violated its company manuals. Under oath, Zetz callously answered: “We had a chance to make a couple of thousand bucks!”

Highly respected attorney. Jerry Lasky Esquire of Moses & Singer, New York, sifted through documents and found a memo stating that the company was prepared to take a “considerable risk for future business.”

Has anything changed at FAF over the last 11 years? Why does FAF senior execs systematically condone at best shady if not fraudulent transactions?

What did they hear from ex Lehman insider Frank McMahon that caused the FAF stock to reach an all time high shortly before it imploded? Did Frank and Parker Kennedy warn investors that FAF was about to turn in a loss for the quarter or was about to face major suits?

Could home buyers file a class action seeking refunds for all the extra payments they had to fork out as a result of their homes being overvalued?

On 11/01/07 Forbes.com reported Cuomo’s statement: “Cuomo said eAppraiseIT and the parent company, ‘First American’ knew its actions were illegal, citing an April 17, 2007 e-mail from eAppraiseIT's president to First American that said: "We view this as a violation of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Office of Thrift Supervision, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice influencing regulation."

Remember we ‘were’ in a rising market. Remember FAF does not blink an eyelid before screwing a family out of millions of dollars for “to make a couple of thousand bucks” and pursuing the lure of future business!!!

How much more did FAF earn for every $10,000 a house was knowingly overvalued by?

How much more did WaMu get to collect monthly for every $10,000 a house was knowingly overvalued by? Did help WaMu inflate its paper?

Furthermore what was the perceived risk?

In a rising market, a higher valued home could increase the risk of the borrower defaulting through higher monthly payments. So what? So much more for FAF and WaMu! WaMu ends up with higher assets on its books, FAF ends up insuring and closing more deals through WaMu!!!

FYI: ‘First American Title To Injustice’ has recently been used as an important exhibit in a major case in Federal Court on the east coast!

Lawyers from Massachusetts to Seattle have been requesting copies of my book!

In the light of the above, what am I to think of your recent comment, that you, your family and friends found my book to be comical? Does that comment underscore your greed, your misplaced ambition and typical arrogance? Are those facets of your personality at the root of your consistent poor judgment in this case?

For my part I wish to thank you for your greed factor, your misplaced ambition and your arrogance. They caused you initially to refuse to settle for fair value when we met in Bellevue and Santa Ana and subsequently with your head stuck in the mud, you disregarded the opprtunity to edit my book and to purchase the publishing rights from Keystar Publications!

Had you acted humbly and fairly during our negotiations, my book would not have seen the light of day. Numerous individuals across the US would not be benefiting from my book and I would not be feeling so vindicated today!

Incidentally do you have any idea how much money your consistent parochial attitude and poor judgment in this case has cost First American directly and indirectly to date?

You will note that the stock went from $49.49 on May 11, 2007 to $55.14 on June 6, 2007 shortly after the presentation at Lehman back to a low of $40.93 on August 2, 2007!In message “Fleet Street UK Reports” posted on August 2, 2007 - Leclezio pertinently points out that:

Ouch!!! Ouch!!! Indeed!!!!I read ‘First American Title To Injustice.’ By Leclezio. It exposes other past similar scams By FAF chief execs.

Its subtitle is "How a Cartel Fleeces the American Consumer." Professor Joseph Eaton (U. Pittsburg) has a very impressive biography on Wikipedia. Professor David Eaton is a Bess Harris Jones Centennial Professor of Natural Resources Policy Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Tom Vilsack, of course, is the ex-Gov. of Iowa.

Two commentaries on that book review state: "In this important and fascinating book, the authors expose a scam that has fleeced Americans of billions of their hard-earned dollars since World War II.” “But they (authors) go on to charge that, beyond mere obsolescence, the title insurance industry is guilty of anticompetitive pricing, overcharging, and possibly fraud.”

The media across the United States has consistently exposed the scams and common abuses inflicted by the title industry upon the American public. Even the usually pro big business Forbes magazine came out with a scathing article on November 13, 2006 highlighting the obsolescence of the First American Title Company and others. Additionally the industry has been the subject of recent Congress hearings.

Another little known book so far, First American Title To Injustice, by Louis Leclézio, was published by Keystar Publications and released in August 2006. Leclézio has neither the impressive credentials of the authors mentioned above nor does he have the name recognition of a magazine such as Forbes.

But Bhishmadev Seebaluck accurately pin points the captivating aspect of this uncommon book. It reveals a different dark facet of the thoroughly corrupt title industry. In his preface to First American Title To Injustice, Mr. Seebaluck writes: “Louis Leclézio has invested all his faith, hope and bitterness in this revealing book which beats all attempts at fiction writing. This work is a penetrating ‘cri de coeur’ which reaches out to the reader and touches the innermost recesses of his heart. First American Title to Injustice is edifying, vindicating. It makes compelling reading… at one sitting.”

For reasons made obvious in the book, Leclézio had limited funds to publish, to promote and to market his book. But that in no way diminishes the broad implications the book should have on the American title industry and the American justice system. Indeed the book has already attracted a number of very positive comments from various circles.

The book was officially launched in the Republic of Mauritius at the opening of World Book Day celebrations on April 28, 2007 by an eminent scholar, the Prime Minister of the Republic. On that occasion, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, a highly respected figure on the world stage commented as follows: “… the National Library has been behind the launching of several books, the next one being one by Mr. Louis Leclézio, whose family has a long standing friendship with mine.

Mr Leclézio swam against the tide – he has gone against the brain drain to come back to the country after many years in the United States. His book “First American Title To Injustice” is an eye opener and I commend it to you all. Especially to those who think the grass is greener on the other side.”

After its publication in August 2006, the book found a place on the shelves of the local bookstores. From there, First American title To Injustice made it in the local press and on the World Wide Web.

“I read in the Sept 1-7, 2006 issue of the "News on Sunday" circulated in Mauritius, an article called "Hitting Back at America". The author calling himself "The Rambler" was describing a book by Mauritian author Louis Leclézio that was predicted to "likely make strong ripples like a tsunami in the United States, and it hits hard against some American giants and the American type of justice". A major week end paper also carried an article in color on the book. (See attached) The well known journalist who was recognized at Harvard for past articles had picked up a copy of the book in a local bookstore. After writing the article, Mr. Henri Marimootoo contacted the author, Louis Leclézio and strongly recommended that the book and his article be distributed to his fellow members of the investigative press in the US. That journalist and numerous others who have read the book perceive that there should be broad appeal for the book in the US.

Indeed Leclézio was recently interviewed to appear on a locally well known prime time TV show. After the show covering Leclézio and First American Title To Injustice is aired in Mauritius, it will be forwarded to US producers such as Oprah and a number of US channels.

With the recent launching of "The American Title Insurance Industry," by Joseph Eaton, David Eaton, and Tom Vilsack in the US, it appears the time has come for the book by Leclézio to be also launched on the American market. Who is pressing rewind?Parker Kennedy? Louis Leclezio? Both?

A few years ago the company’s stock price was inflated through creative accounting. Concurrently Parker issued a false statement at a share holders’ meeting concerning dividend hikes. The company stock surged. The dividend hike never materialized and the stock price imploded.

At the time Leclezio published an audio on the web of the false statement made by Parker Kennedy. The company was so infuriated that it sent its attorney John Ludlow of Bellevue to meet with Leclezio’s attorneys in Seattle. In his briefcase Ludlow carried a pile of posts purported to originate from Leclezio. Ludlow threatened to sue Leclezio on behalf of First American unless Leclezio stopped posting on the Yahoo/Finance/FAF/Msg board forthwith!

Leclezio refused to succumb to threats and could not be silenced.

The company suffered huge losses but they never dared to reopen their can of worms involving Leclezio.

Gradually the market cap of the First American Corporation dropped from approximately $2.5 billion dollars to $900 million dollars.

The First American shill on this board then posted messages to intimidate Leclezio. He suggested that Leclezio should be dumped in the sea with brick boots on!!! Leclezio’s address at 10021 N.E. 16th Place Bellevue was also published on this board.

Some of that past history may no longer be available on the Yahoo/FAF/Msg board. But hard copies have been saved.

First American appears to have ways and means to cause incriminating messages to be deleted.

Does anyone know what happened to the recent message by ‘avoidbiglosses’ published on this bulletin board? Was it revealing too much about First American’s potential market manipulation shortly before the stock imploded? Does that possibly explain why that message was promptly removed? Have hard copies of that message been saved by anyone?

Does anyone know how the audio published by Leclezio on the web to expose Parker was also made to disappear a few years ago? Luckily a copy of that tape has been saved for future reference.

That post reminded me of James J. Dufficy’s statement in mail dated November 27, 2006: “Louis: I have refrained from responding to your many slanders, lies and distortions, published in your book…” It also reminded me of a 2 page letter from Hagens & Berman asking that I stop publishing and distributing my book! Yet, all I ask is that justice be done.

However, being privately accused of slander and publicly cited as delusional offers me the opportunity to lay out the evidence before a world wide audience. I am forced to do so in support the bare facts as laid out in my book: ‘First American Title To Injustice’.

From time to time I will post on the web some of the hard evidence gathered against Dufficy and the First American Corporation. Let an unbiased public be my judge.

In any event, I hope that the evidence will serve to expose perjury by Dufficy and others. It will also highlight how First American tampered with some of the evidence gathered in Federal Court Case # D.C. No. CV – 98 – 01198 – TSZ.

And how thereafter with the help of Hagens and Berman, First American Title was able to coerce a corrupt ruling out of dishonorable Federal Court judge Thomas S. Zilly of the US District Court – Seattle - Washington.

Indeed numerous well qualified impartial experts have opined that First American dealt with such dirty hands, that they did not even deserve their day in court!

Although a file has already been compiled and will be turned over to a Grand Jury Investigation in due course, please note that for the public consumption through the internet, no priority will be given to the severity of the crimes committed by Dufficy, the First American Corporation and Hagens and Berman. Documents will be published at random in no specific order starting with the following.

Let us consider the facts disclosed at pages 37 & 38 of my book ‘First American Title To Injustice’:

“For example on November 20th 1998, James J. Dufficy, Senior National Claims Counsel for First American signed a document under oath stating that he had read First American’s responses to our interrogatories and requests for documents, that he knew the contents of the documents and believed the same to be true!

In answer number 9 to our request for admission, Dufficy and counsel for First American state:

“First American admits recording a Deed of Trust in favor of the lender and a Deed of Trust in favor of First American. First American denies that it ‘caused’ either Deed of Trust to be recorded, and states that said Deeds of Trust were recorded at the request and direction of the lender and of (our ex-partner!)”

Having made that statement, when First American was asked to provide copies of documents during the discovery process, First American must have felt that it had no other option but to tamper with the Indemnity document it had obtained from our ex-partner. Thus First American supplied us with a copy of the Indemnity Agreement wherein paragraph 6 had been blanked out. Since paragraph 6 was at the bottom of the first page of the document, First American must have hoped that in flipping the page over we would miss the fact that the paragraph sequence jumped from 5 to 7. When we asked First American for the original of the document, we understood why paragraph 6 had to disappear.

In flagrant contradiction of Dufficy’s sworn statement, under paragraph 6 of the Indemnity Agreement that had been prepared by First American for its sole benefit – First American, an expert in the field, best equipped to engineer the fraud and map out its execution, makes the request from our ex-partner and instructs him as follows:

“Indemnitor (our ex partner) shall deposit with First American a properly executed Deed of Trust to be recorded in a second lien position against the property as described in paragraph 1 above to secure the indemnity obligation herein.” Indeed First American directed the actions of our ex-partner. That was most contrary to what Dufficy, a senior officer of First American and also an officer of the court, considering himself fully informed, had stated and signed under oath!”

Now please compare exhibit 42, a copy of the Indemnity agreement first produced by First American with the original document being exhibit 43 I was forced to call for from First American.

Historically this is nothing new. It is a repeat of the hysteria of the 1990s:

But you don't get any sense of a great wailing of guilt at the institutions.

Check it out. First American Kennedy and McMahon were presenting at the Lehman Brothers 2007 Financial Services Conference on May 17, 2007, at 11:40 a.m. EDT. That conference was held at Lehman Brothers' European Headquarters, located at 25 Bank Street, London.

It sent the First American stock momentarily sky rocketing only days before Lehman downgraded the company days later.

On June 7, 2007 the stock imploded on unusually high volume while Kennedy and McMahon were desperately trying to pump it up at the Stephens Springs Investment Conference.

Issa me présentait une copie de son livre le 4 Mai, 2007. Depuis je le savourais lentement. Je mâchais les mots, les phrases et je ruminais certaines pensées pendant longtemps. Je voulais les digérer doucement pour les apprécier à leurs justes valeurs. J’essayais de retirer le maximum de nutrition de ce met mentale, morale et spirituelle que Issa avait préparé avec tant de soins et d’amour.

Je m’appesantissais donc sur certaines saveurs que je reconnaissais et d’autres que je découvrais. Les unes étaient plus prononcées, les autres moins épicées tandis que d’autres encore étaient si subtile et relevaient tellement d’un terroir riche et divers qu’il me fallait être du même sol pour les reconnaîtrent.

Finalement le 21 Mai, 2007 tout le repas, a partir des entrées jusqu’au dessert suivi de fromages et de fruits, tout avait été entamé. Comme bien convient a la fin d’un tel rare et somptueux repas je me mettais au lit détendu et heureux. Ma dernière pensée avant de m’endormir fut : ‘Mon dieu, Merci pour ce repas. Merci pour Issa qui l’a préparé et me l’a offert. – Mon Dieu, ce repas, combien j’aimerais pouvoir le partager avec mes frères a travers l’humanité toute entière.

Ce soir la j’ai rêvé que je me promenais dans un magnifique verger. De nombreuses années s’étaient écoulées depuis que j’avais passé par là. Quoique je fusse né à Eureka et que mon enfance jouait par là, je ne pouvais reconnaître si je me trouvais de nouveau dans le même verger d’antan? Tout avait tellement grandi. Tout était tellement plus beau et plus grand. Cependant, des nombreuses variétés de mangues par exemple, il n’en restait plus que quelques unes qui avait survécu. Regardant les arbres de très près, j’essayais de reconnaître les arbres et les espèces qui auraient été greffé par Mailo.

Oui Mailo était cet expert botaniste que la nature avait choisi pour lui apprendre ses secrets. Seul son amour intense de la nature et sa compréhension instinctive que nous sommes tous nourris par la même sève avait enseigné à Mailo comment greffer avec soin et délicatesse des espèces de formes, de goût et de couleur varié les unes sur les autres. Ce vieil Hindou aux cheveux blancs, travaillait humblement et paisiblement tantôt dans les jardins du Gouverneur au Réduit et tantôt dans le verger d’Euréka à Moka. Il avait aussi bien réussi ces greffes dans le jardin du représentant de la couronne Britannique que dans le jardin d’un colon français à faire un arbre portait différents fruits ou encore un seul rosier donner des fleurs de couleurs variés.

Même dans mon rêve, je reconnaissais les senteurs des fruits. Je me rappelais de la couleur des arbres et de la forme des différentes feuilles. Je me remémorais aussi les parfums qui montaient de la terre et des ruisseaux qui sillonnaient le verger pour l’irriguer. Le tout faisait encore un dans ma mémoire. Cependant le tout avait tellement évolué que je me perdais dans ce jardin devenu méconnaissable tant il avait grandi, tant il était beau et tant les fruits, les fleurs, les oiseaux et les papillons étaient abondants.

J’essayais de comprendre comment en l’espace d’une quarantaine d’années si vite écoulée, ce jardin s’était tant métamorphosé. Je regardais vers l’horizon. Vers là où enfant, nous regardions dans la direction du coucher du soleil. Nous étions si souvent plein d’espérance. Au delà de la limite du verger, a l’horizon, pourrions nous ce soir voir de nouveau le rayon vert ? Comme nous étions heureux les soirées ou nous pouvions fièrement crier : Oui ! Ce soir je l’ai vu moi, le rayon vert. Et toi, l’as-tu vu aussi ? Il a paru pour moi juste au moment même ou le soleil semblait sombrer à jamais à l’horizon. Où encore durant certaine soirée quand l’air était pur on pouvait distinguer la Réunion qui se dessinait à l’horizon. La vois tu toi, cette Réunion dans le lointain ?

Et puis, tout a coup, dans mon rêve, au delà de l’horizon, par delà le rayon vert, dans la direction de cette Réunion si rarement visible, un Baobab énorme se dressait. Il s’élevait et se dessinait majestueux sur la toile du ciel multicolore qui annonçait le crépuscule. Je marchais de plus en plus vite vers lui. Et plus je me rapprochais de ce Baobab, plus je réalisais, qu’il n’était pas exactement comme les autres que j’avais déjà vus à Madagascar ou en Afrique. Il n’avait du Baobab que le tronc et le début des branches. Mais certaines de ses branches étaient chargées de fruits différents tandis que d’autres portaient des fleurs offrant un véritable kaléidoscope de couleurs. Une multitude de papillons de couleurs vives se joignaient aux abeilles dans une danse folle pour butiner les fleurs qui à leur tour donneraient une variété de fruits. Tout autour de lui épelait bonheur et joie.

Regardant de près certaines des branches de ce Baobab géant, je croyais reconnaître le travail méticuleux de Mailo. Il avait tant essayé de m’éduquer, et avec combien de patience, dans son art de greffer une variété de fruit fragile et délicate sur le tronc d’un arbre plus robuste. Mailo considérait cela comme étant sa mission dans le monde. C’était sa vision d’un verger parfait. Il était convaincu que tout les arbres peuvent être améliorés et peuvent se surpasser en se supportant les uns les autres, en partageant leurs sève, leurs valeurs et en métissant leurs nature fondamentalement similaire quoique différentes sur la surface . Malheureusement, moi j’étais alors trop jeune et trop bête pour saisir l’importance et la valeur de l’enseignement que Mailo était si désireux de m’offrir gracieusement et gratuitement !

Dans mon rêve, non seulement je revoyais Mailo, mais je l’entendais aussi me répéter combien cela était important d’identifier le point commun de chaque espèce avant de choisir où, comment et à quelle profondeur faire l’incision qui serait propice au succès de la nouvelle implantation. Pour Mailo tout cela n’était plus un secret. Au départ, il suffisait pour lui de connaître les liens communs de chaque espèce et de reconnaître le parcours de la sève de vie. A partir de là il ne lui restait plus qu’à les rassembler et puis à les assembler tout en comprenant, espérant même, que l’un ne ressemblerait jamais totalement à l’autre. Il fallait aussi beaucoup penser pour savoir comment les panser, comment abreuver et nourrir leur évolution, et finalement les élaguer et exposer celui si à la lumière et celui la à l’ombre.

Oui mon rêve m’avait bien reconduit dans le verger évolué d’Euréka. Grâce a Mailo, aujourd’hui tout était beau, tout était bon, tout s’était épanoui autour de ce Baobab geant. Ces fruits étaient en abondance. Mais ils ne s’appelaient plus mangue, pêche, ananas, banane ou goyave. Ils avaient de nouvelles étiquettes tel que paix, entente, joie, espoir et amour ! Alors que ses racines s’accrochait pour se nourrir a une variété de sol, sur le tronc lui-même, touriste, linguiste, philosophe, anthropologue, religieux, historien ou jardinier avait peint en graffiti et aussi graver sur l’écorce le mot : ‘Interculturel’ ! Cela valait bien tout.

Il m’était évident que là, dans ce verger enchanteur, Mailo avait dévoilé au monde qui l’avait compris sa conception de l’interculturel. Les arbres que Mailo avait habilement greffés et éduqué étaient arrivés à se dépasser. A travers ce métissage qui respectait la force individuelle d’un chacun tout en recherchant l’essentiel commun de tous, ils avaient tous pu et su s’améliorer mutuellement pour résister aux attaques des pestes, aux intempéries, aux fléaux et rapporter des fruits abondamment.

Le Mardi 22 Mai 2007, la Providence Divine me faisait lire le passage suivant de Pierre Debergé. Il etait publié dans le Calendrier de Saint Paul. Elles sont en ligne avec les Écritures Saintes recommandées pour ce jour.

« Qu’ils soient un ! » (Jn 17, 1-11) Voila la grande et dernière prière de Jésus. Il prie pour que ses disciples vivent dans l’unité de l’amour.

Comment comprendre cette unité ?

« Sûrement pas comme une uniformité qui ne laisserait pas de place au souffle de l’Esprit, aux richesses de chacun et a la diversité qui fonde la véritable communion. « Qu’ils soient un ! » : Ce n’est pas non plus la nostalgie d’une unité perdue, mais l’espérance de ceux, qui dans un réel souci de communion, se laissent bousculer par les attentes des hommes et des femmes d’aujourd’hui, avec les nécessaires conversions qu’elles impliquent. »

Mauritius Sugar Industry - Restructuring - Part 2

In our last correspondence, I mentioned that another comment concerning the restructuring of the Mauritian sugar industry would follow.

I hope it is helpful and that you deem it worthy of publication.

It is important to note that I have no individual stake or any personal financial benefit to be derived from my opinions below.

My only standing is that of a ‘run of the mill’ Mauritian with deep roots in the ‘di lo diboute’ industry. This alone causes me to stand up for what I firmly believe in.

One of the ideals of John F. Kennedy: Ask not what your country can do for you but rather what you can do for your country provides my otherwise arid imagination with the fertile soil it needs to grow the following suggestions.

I like to think that Government and the sugar industry already have in place a far better blue print than the simplistic one I dreamt out below.

1) A value of ‘x’ million rupees should be contributed by the sugar industry for compensation in the form of land. Regardless whether ‘x’ representing ‘La Clef des Champs’ unlocks the door to one thousand or ten thousand acres, acreage should be a token, key part of the restructuring. At a minimum it would be in recognition of Government’s relentless efforts and in appreciation of the settlement offered by the EU.

2) A basket of parcels of land should be identified. It should comprise land of different extent and of varying ‘highest and best use’. It should be spread over a broad geographic area.

3) The appraised value for the final acreage of the designated desirable land will obviously be equal to ‘x’.

4) The value of the land will be appraised according to standards of MAI. (Members of Appraisers Institute) rather than made as instructed.

5) Desirable parcels and the adequate zoning thereof should meet a wide variety of objectives.
a. Possible IRS and residential development to provide both short term capital and long term revenue to government. It will help meet the progressive needs of all Mauritians affected by the restructuring process.
b. Commercial/Industrial parcels within or on the outskirts of villages.
c. Agricultural land to cater for the needs of those whose roots are steeped deep into farming.

Like most Mauritians are, I am also fully aware of the key role education has played in the present day gigantic economic success of our island. In step with his own father, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the father of education for all Mauritians in an independent Mauritius, I know that our Honourable Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, will do all in his power to further the education of the present and next generations of Mauritians.

Further witnessing the accomplishments of the director of our National Library, Mr. Yves Chan Kam Lon and aware of the importance Mr Chan Kam Lon attributes to providing access to libraries to children and adults living in villages and rural areas, some of the funds generated from the above ventures could be designated to the development of libraries in rural areas.

I like to think that a road map along the route of the above but much improved and as traced out by Government professionals will be gladly followed by the private sector. It would serve to fuel our economic progress and education needs. It could go a long way to generate goodwill and add momentum to the continued harmonic and economic growth of our overall population for years to come.

A set of coincidental circumstances took me last Wednesday night to a grandiose gathering. Had I known where I was going, I would have taken my camera. You could have seen pictures of the age old most famous Mauritius Police Band playing on the verandah of this Colonial day’s home set amid sugar cane fields.

This trip back in time for a present day small peon like me stirred up old feelings. And after a brief conversation I had with one of the guests, I could not resist forwarding the following to the local press.

As John F. Kennedy once said, I am here looking for what I can do for my country…

Down memory lane…
Has much changed?

Over the past weeks there has been much discussion about adequate compensation for all concerning the restructuring of the sugar industry.

Two recent remarks caught my attention. “Should the Government ask the sugar industry for 2000 acres only or should Government ask for 10,000 acres?” Likewise on the subject of IRS, Government also recognized that rules need to be reviewed urgently. Otherwise Government could end up being “Le dindon de la farce”.

Those two remarks sent me down memory lane along the ways of the past.

Fernand Leclezio, our father, is remembered by some for having set the foundation in the forties for three of the four sugar mills that will survive the crucial present restructuring. He is also remembered fondly by some past Government members. In an interview with l’Express published on Friday November 21, 2003, Sir Satcam Boolel was asked:

Quels sont les chemins que vous avez croisés au cours de votre carrière et qui restent pour vous des références ?

Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, Sookdeo Bissoondoyal, Bickramsing Ramlallah et aussi Fernand Le Clézio qui était un avant-gardiste. Je le rencontrais souvent. Il avait une grande ouverture d’esprit. Et puis, il y a Guy Rozemont. Si je ne l’avais pas rencontré, je ne serais sans doute pas dans le Parti Travailliste.

Today the sons of Sir Seewoosagur and Sir Satcam are following in their father’s footsteps. With continued vision they are leading our country on a voyage to an ever better exemplary land.

Today, my brother, my sisters and I best remember our father for setting the foundations to better housing and better living conditions for labour. Back in the mid fifties Government did not have to ask him to do so. He gladly did so of his own free will. Way back then, Government and F.U.E.L. got together to develop ‘Happy Village’ with all its social activity centers, recreation fields and shopping facility.

Two old pictures dating back to the fifties testify to the ‘revolutionary’ or should I say counter revolutionary housing our father laid the foundations to.

Has much changed…?

I recall that way back then other sugar millers complained bitterly about our father. Some even went as far as to accuse him of being a communist. Others simply blamed him for doing the right thing and setting a commendable example. They argued that he was introducing a precedent within the industry. That his worthy efforts would turn out to be very costly to the rest of the industry. They feared that labour across the island would now come to expect equal housing standards from all other millers and they claimed that they could not afford it!

Today, our Government takes to heart the welfare of all Mauritians. So, it is asking over and over again for a fair deal for all through the restructuring process. Is the sugar industry hearing? If so, what will be the noble, fair, just and equitable final answer from that industry?

Today, we further ask: Are those within the sugar industry who are benefiting most from our father’s vision, leading that industry with the same open mind and open hands that characterized our father? Are they continuing the journey along a visionary path for the fair, just and equitable benefit of all Mauritians?

Indeed, the members of the industry would not even have to reinvent the WEAL in order to bring the West and the East together in an Association that Lasts. They should merely, follow the example originally set in the fifties. (More to come in a future column on a possible present day fair restructuring involving acreage – Is 2000 acres a mere snack?)

Interestingly enough, on May 9th, I was at a reception that gathered Honourable members of the Government, honourable members of the EU and members of the sugar industry. Back stage, I was helping Jacqueline Dalais of 'La Clef des Champs' (purely coincidental name) provide palatable snacks to the hungry crowd. For a brief moment I ventured among the guests. A lady guest said to me: “The sugar industry desperately needs a visionary like your father to day”. Does that lady have some uncanny vision or was it wishful thinking on her part?

Had I had a glass in hand right then, I would have raised it high to the fathers of our great nation and to those who are still walking in their footsteps.

“It is in giving that we receive.” (St. Francis.) Our father often reminded us that when we die, the only worthy goods we get to take with us are those we gave away.

What a Scene...'Seine' Fishing in Rodrigues...

Time & Tide wait for no man…

But here we spent time waiting for tide. Mr. Donald in the yellow jacket has been net fishing in the lagoons of Rodrigues for thirty five years. He learnt from his father who set nets for decades before him. Indeed Darwin might say that they have done it for so long that evolution has even caused the fisherman’s feet to be webbed.

Over the years they have mastered the intricate alphabet of the sea. They know exactly how to read the multi topaz shades of the vast lagoon as the clouds, the wind and the tides write all over it when, where and how to catch fish?

Only the wind and the clappety clap of the waves add sound to the otherwise silent language of that fishing experience in Rodrigues. Like clockwork and without exchanging a word at some mysterious signal from the sea or the wind or the tide or the fish, each and every one of the thirty or so fisherman took his position all over the fishing field.

Some boats set out in one direction to pay the nets in position while other boats went in the opposite direction to form a wide semi circle. The fisherman in the boats setting out the nets knew exactly the favorite fish freeways carrying the highest traffic. They cast their nets across all the freeway lanes running along the sea floor. Although the players at one end of the fishing field could not see those at the other end and without any cell phones or loud speaker to start off the play, the whole team started playing their individual role all at once as if by some magic impulse.

Once the nets were set, just like cops with sirens blaring, the fisherman in the boats forming the semi circle set off in pursuit of all fish within the region. By keeping pace with each other and the fish, they ensured that all fish traffic from secondary feeder lanes in the neighborhood headed towards the freeway and the road block. Giving loud chase, the fisherman used sticks to drum on the side of their boats while splashing the water with their poles. The intense commotion and well paced chase caused the fish to panic. The fish raced head on towards the nets waiting to intercept them. At the road block, some of the more daring fish raced at full speed in a last ditch effort to try to bust the road block by flying over it. The fisherman had anticipated that move and the nets were laid about two feet above the water surface. They were instantly caught within the net and were left dangling in the air. Ironically one of the boats sported the name: ‘Do not panic’.

Well my dear children, grand children and all those who happen to read my fishing story, I hope that you enjoy it and the pictures that confirm the story.

Dear Children, grand children, family and friends,

I am glad that I was able to mail a few candy to you today.

God is so good! He keeps confirming His active presence by my side so much and so often. In my Easter wish card, I mention how much I enjoy the reading at p.96 of the Jan – March ’07 issue.

I will have been here for over a year now. Up to yesterday, I was not satisfied about the presence of Jesus in the living room. Eve & I had put a ‘palm’ cross in her basket of shells.

The other day I placed a crucifix in the shark’s mouth with Jim Dufficy name written below.

To me it represents that regardless how the sharks of this world maul and bleed us; Jesus is always there to save us by His own cross.

But the room still felt empty! Finally, yesterday while I was cleaning my briefcase of all the mildew it had accumulated during the rainy season, I came across the picture of the monument I had designed and painted in the back of our yard in Bellevue.

The yellow cross for the light, it brings us that I had painted above the dark world from which Jesus arose, the perfectly round stone to be rolled away that I had picked on our 1600 acres in Ephrata, the blue sky beckoning us to rise by the light of the cross. Finally, you will remember the massive piece of solid granite enveloping it all on which I had written: “Let the rock be…”

Well I stuck the picture up on the wall and I felt content!

But as if that was not enough, this morning Jesus organized some great readings to confirm: “Job well done!”

First I read in St. Paul’s calendar: There are times when Jesus confirms His presence by our side! I did not have to take long to receive His confirmation. The reading for today is Matthew: 28, 1 – 10. At line 3: “The angel came and rolled away the stone…”; At line 6: “He has risen…” Am I glad I was inspired to put that picture up yesterday! Am I thankful and grateful God confirmed His presence by my side today! I do not deserve it all at all!

To those of you I have not been able to reach, I wish you a most Blessed and happy Easter.

Fruits of Lenten Prayers & Meditations

Dear All,

I am thankful that during lent some of you have advised me how much you are enjoying reading: ‘Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence’ – ‘Confiance en le Providence Divine’ by Claude de la Colombiere and Abbe de Saint Jurre.

I have spent most evenings during Lent listening to: Table of Plenty, I go before you…, On the wings of a snow white dove, Gentle woman…,

Thereafter I have said the rosary while meditating on the mysteries. I love this picture that I took of Our Blessed Mother handing over the rosary to St. Dominic.

As Lent comes to an end and we are about to embrace the joyful resurrection of Easter, I would like to share with you two personal prayers. They are a great source of peace and joy to me. They are the fruits of my daily meditations on ‘Trustful Surrender…’ and are also the result of my examining my conscience daily.

The first prayer is simply an addition to the ‘Our Father…’ At the end of that wise prayer taught to us by Jesus, I now add: “Please Lord grant the necessary graces to all those we have offended so they will forgive us and deliver them from all evil caused by our offences as well as all other evil.” “Accordez les grâces nécessaires a ceux que nous avons offensé pour qu’il nous pardonnent et délivrez les de tout le mal causé par nos offenses et de tout autre mal.”

The second prayer has evolved around the Coptic woolen bracelet with the 33 knots representing the 33 years of Jesus given to me by Sœur Maridere at the Voirons Monastery.

On it I like to repeat: « Seigneur Jésus, je vous aime et je vous adore. Je mets toute ma confiance en votre volonté sachant que Vous continuerais à avoir pitié de moi un pauvre pécheur. » – My Lord Jesus, I adore You and I love You. I place all of my trust in You being confident that You will go on showing mercy to me, a miserable sinner.

Afterwards I read a chapter from an old book given to me by aunt Lilly. It is called: ‘Notre Dame de Tous Les Jours’ by Paula Hoesl – ‘Our Everyday Lady’. It speaks of the mysteries of the rosary and their individual fruits. I will share those with you some other day.

As a result of the above I have spent a most peaceful and enjoyable Lent. My prayerful Indian neighbor who is a teacher remarked to me the other day that he only has to look at me to know that I am never alone. I then asked him what does he teach? When he answered Math, I told him that I thought it was theology.

Have a most blessed 'Good & Holy Friday' and a joyful and peaceful Happy Easter.

Synchronicity, coincidence, E.S.P., Clin Dieu?

How we choose to call all the small/big miracles that furnish our daily life is not important. What matters most is that we keep our senses open to them. What matters most is that we record them in faith for posterity. What matters most is for us to remember to praise and to thank God for the many small/big blessings that He fills our daily life with!

Some of us may look at a blazing red rose bush and see the ‘burning bush’. - Others may pass by it and see nothing at all. Let us praise and thank God for opening our senses to all the beauty He envelopes us with daily!

Indeed, shortly before opening Lou’s mail, I had been thanking God for awakening me to a number of the small/big miracles He garnishes my daily life with to keep me happy. I told Lou that through much prayer and meditation during this Lenten season, I have come to better understand and readily accept that what can be – IS! What cannot and should not be; never has to be.

It is only when we stupidly attempt to supersede God and impose our will over His infinite wisdom and try to tamper with his designs for our ultimate happiness that we encounter frustrations, anger, impatience, dissatisfaction etc.

But on the other hand, when we live to the letter, the prayer that Jesus taught us: “Let Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven…” then we gradually learn to experience heaven on earth. The more we do so, the more our senses become alive to His small/big miracles in our lives and we are always happy.

The blue sea of goodness that laps and salts our life on earth blends in with the blue sky that lovingly waters and elevates our soul, our body, our heart and our spirit towards the very horizon that blends heaven and earth into our joyful daily life.

Yesterday, completely out of the blue I received a rare letter with enclosures from Alice. When I looked at the picture, I praised and Thanked God for this most evident small/big miracle. At first, I was eager to call Didier and share my thoughts with him.

Instead I am glad I chose to wait. I decided that I would do so when they would next come to pray. They usually come on Thursday nights. But last night, also out of the blue, they called asking if they could drop by?

I have realized over the last few months how meaningful it would have been for Didier to have his mother Marie Rose or at the very least his aunt Eve to walk him up the aisle on his wedding day! So as they sat down, I said Didier, please know that your mother has been particularly close to you over the last few weeks. And she has kept telling us so!

Look at the picture I just received out of the blue from Alice today!

But as if that is not enough, please tell me again where are your brother and his family staying since their arrival in Mauritius to attend your wedding? He answered: ‘Pointe d’Esny’.

I, then, asked him to look at the reverse side of the picture:

He exclaimed: Yes! That’s mommy’s writing all right! But why does Mom write ‘Pointe d’Esny’ when their bungalow was with the rest of the Leclezio clan in Trou d’Eau Douce?

As I watched tears well up in his eyes I had to ask: Yeah! Although it makes no sense, even Pointe d’Esny had to be there for Marie Rose to prove to you that she is present in our present! “How much louder does your mother have to scream that presence and her closeness to you ,for you to hear her at this very special ‘carrefour’ of your life?”

Didier and Valerie sure saw the burning bush in that picture last night. And their tears far from putting it out was fuelling its flames within their hearts pounding with love.

I will later share another experience viewed by the light of God as it shone briefly upon Eve a few days ago. In that light I was gratified to read the same unwritten words Jesus traced out with His finger in the sand. I read them to say: “Don’t worry! Be happy! Your daily prayers are heard. My mother and I are watching over Eve! We all continue to love her dearly.

God bless Mauritius… Paradise not lost… Yet…

Dear All,

I have just lived through three days of intense emotion.

On Saturday afternoon, Véronique invited me to attend a rally starting at 2:00 PM ending at 5:00PM against the proposed legalization of abortion in Mauritius. The large hall of St. Mary’s was packed full inside with hundreds more people standing outside. Not bad for a sunny Saturday afternoon!

Prior to the rally, Véronique had answered questions from the press. Various speakers referred to her press communiqué. A great Islamic theologian, Mr. Imran Beedassy representing the Jummah Mosquée quoted from various passages of the Koran regarding the evil of abortion. In ending he singled Véronique out to congratulate her on her ‘tit for tat’ press presentation. Mr. Beedassy and Véronique received a well earned ovation.

One of the most deplorable aspect that the so called civilized countries fail to consider concerning the snowballing evolution of the evil of abortion was highlighted by Mr. Adith Nobaub of ISKCON.

He first quoted from ‘Les Ecrits Védiques’ to point out that life is made of two elements: the spiritual and the material. From the time of conception it is the spiritual that ensures the growth of the body. This is why when our spirit departs, our flesh dies.

Woe! To those who dare destroy not only the flesh but the spirit!

Woe! To those large ‘civilized’ countries for the bad example they set for a small country like Mauritius who feels that ‘if the big ones did it, so should we, so can we’.

It would be abhorrent for a small self respecting country like Mauritius to choose to lose its integrity and moral high standards and to seek to justify the legalization of abortion on the grounds that those bigger ‘civilized’ powers have endorsed murder!

After living in America for thirty years, I was delighted to share one of my favorite quotes from Mahatma Gandhi with Adith.

An English journalist once asked Gandhi: “What do you think of Western civilization?”

After pondering over the question for a minute or two, Gandhi replied: “I think that it would be an excellent idea.”

How much more pertinent would Gandhi’s reply be today in the face of such a violent world promoting the slaughter of the most innocent of all, the voiceless and the powerless!

In this world gone wild, let us pray that Mauritius remains a rare beacon of light and of hope committed to the sanctity of LIFE!

Let modern Mauritian politicians not forget that their present day power in this country and the rich rewards the country is harvesting today was sown on the back of those who honored, cherished and found their strength in the abundance of life that God blessed them with yesterday!

Let modern Mauritian politicians not surrender to the counsel of the faithless, the ill advised and the short sighted. The lure of a fast buck cannot replace the long lasting power of life. The real strength in the value of people and the force of their number far exceeds the questionable worth of a dollar that cannot be counted upon.

In India where moral values are held high by the masses, last year the well-known religious leader and social activist, Swami Agnivesh, began a campaign across five northern and western Indian states against female foeticide. During his campaign he said:

"There's no other form of violence that's more painful, more abhorrent, more shameful".

'Motherhood'!

Respect for sanctity of life... Do some humans have much to learn yet...?

Mauritius already boasts of a controversial facility that sells monkeys for big profits to international labs for research.

Will the legalization of abortion give birth to the business of selling aborted babies piecemeal or whole to international labs?

Who will be its financial beneficiaries?

How lively a business will it prove to be in the long term for its advocates and or financial beneficiaries when it is rooted in death?

May modern Mauritian politicians listen to the voice of those in the US who have the courage to call a spade, a spade.

In the US: “The new Middle Passage in the greatest Holocaust in black history is the birth canal.

In the US: The civil rights 'élite' has forgotten the lives of unborn black children and has joined those who choose to kill them. Unbelievable! They have forgotten that in the past racists snatched black babies from their mother’s arms and sold them into slavery. Today, they snatch them from their mother’s womb and throw them in the garbage.

Let our ‘élite’ today not forget the sacrifices of those who put them there. Let all continue to respect and believe in the power of abundant life and vote for warm blood and the life it sustains as well as the power it generates!

In the light of the benefits of life, why is abortion so contagious? Why does abortion legislation take epidemic proportions?

How many more billions of dollars are made annually from the consequences of ‘safe’ abortion through post psychological care for depression, sexual malfunction etc. and the medications associated therewith?

Do we get the picture yet?

Is abortion an altruistic Government responsibility or could it be a demoniacal and dark source of vast revenue for the limited ‘élite’?

Abortion under any form does not meet the need of women. Abortion is rather a sign that society and Government is not meeting the needs of women!

Not with rage, but rather through prayer, action and with wisdom, we must urge all Mauritians to meet our ban on abortion.

Please let us pray that Mauritius will remain a beacon of light acclaimed world wide by those who believe in the sanctity of all life!

Mauritius is a paradise not lost yet and never to be lost.

Yesterday we went to Trou d’Eau Douce.

In just over an hour we had collected over two pounds of big bigorneaux (periwinkles)!

I have eaten them in South Africa, Europe and Mauritius. Being unbiased, I declare that the best variety is to be found in Mauritius. My heart was pounding every time I saw a big one. After a forty years absence they were still to be found where I used to pick them forty years ago and they were just as big!

On our return to Curepipe, Didier and Valerie prepared a delicious bouillon for supper.

As if it was not enough to witness so many people showing up on Saturday to defend the sanctity of life, today I had another vivid testimony of how strong and alive the interdenominational faith is strong and alive in Mauritius.

On Saturday I had tears of joy listening to the passionate Speeches of the speakers and also listening to Emilie’s songs against abortion. Today, on the feast day of St. Joseph, I had tears of joy listening to Monseigneur Piat, to brother Michel from Reunion Island and to the director of St. Joseph’s College speaking about the role that the de La Salle Catholic brothers played in education in Mauritius! The College, my college was celebrating its 130th Anniversary today! I felt so privileged to share this moment and I thanked God for granting me an extra lease of life after my cancer surgery so I could walk to the church on time and be there!

Little has changed around the school yard and in the assembly hall over the last 45 years.

In the past I testified how in Mauritius, people of all color, creed and origin come together to participate reverently at each other’s ceremonies! Today a week day such a celebration lasted two and a half hours and no one left early regardless of their individual faith! There were seven priests and the Bishop around the altar!

During consecration I thanked God for the formation that I received at Saint Joseph’s college. A formation that I carried with me around the world! Our children remember how each morning as I dropped them at Sacred Heart School in Bellevue, I stopped and took time to go pray in front of St. Joseph asking him to help me be a good father and provider spiritually and materially.

I thanked God for our five children and our nineteen grand children with one more on the way this year1 What a rich life we have had regardless of how the likes of First American and its vassals Dufficy et al treated us…!

This is indeed the land that I love. This is indeed the land of the free…
